JC walked away from me as I finished up in my office. I didn’t think it was a good idea we spend the night at his wife’s home; worse was spending the night without Noah.

When I entered the loft, Noah was dressed for dinner and sitting in his office, finishing payroll. Soft jazz played on his iPod and he looked up at me as I entered his office.

“So, ready for dinner?” he asked with a smile.

“Yes, I am. Let me get changed. Uh, I have something to ask you about tomorrow.”

Noah took off his glasses and gave me his full attention.

“JC and his wife have offered for us to stay in their home tomorrow night. I figured it would be better than driving back to the city in the dark.”

He nodded, and I thought I saw a hint of a smile. “That makes sense. I’m sure after a full day we’ll be pretty tired.”

“I’ll text JC and let him know that we’re going to stay. One other thing, the party theme is white.”

“Does that mean we have to wear all white or the decorations are white?”

“Both, I guess. Vincent said to wear white. I have that white bikini; it would be perfect.”

Noah frowned. “That thing is very skimpy and doesn’t cover all of your ass.”

“But it looks fantastic on me.”

“I admit that it does, but I prefer the fantastic is only for me.”

“Are you jealous?”

“Not one bit. The ring on your finger says that I can touch, but others can’t.”

“Noah, you never have to worry.”

I went to the bedroom to change for our dinner at Monster Barbecue. I was starved since I hadn’t eaten much for lunch. I texted JC to let him know we would be staying at their home after the party.

We’ll be staying overnight if that’s alright.

That’s great. I’m delighted. I can’t wait to see you.

JC’s response made me uncomfortable. Our relationship was extending beyond boss to a subordinate.

Chapter 6

Monster Barbecue was crowded. The air held the aroma of cooking meat and spicy sauce. Because Noah knew the owner, we were escorted to one of the butcher paper clad round tables away from the noisy bar area. After we ordered our drinks, Noah began questioning me about JC as I read through the menu.

“You seem to be pretty friendly with JC. I wouldn’t expect it.”

“Why?”

“Come on, Lexi. Your relationship ended horribly and he screwed you over at Carver.”

I began to chew on my lip, but Noah didn’t seem to notice. “He’s my boss; we have history. End of story.”

“I just know that if someone treated me that way, I wouldn’t be so easy to forgive them.”

I raised my voice, but it didn’t register much above the din of the restaurant. “Why are you ruining this for me?”

Noah sipped at his water. “I’m not. I’m just trying to understand the dynamic.”

“If you’re asking if I still have feelings for him, I don’t. I deserve this job. I worked hard for years to become director, and even though he’s my boss, I’m not letting that interfere.”
