It’s nearly 7:45 AM, and I might just be lucky enough to catch the 7:58 train if I hurry. I do catch it, but I end up standing. The office is still quiet when I enter but I notice that JC’s door is open. He peers out when he hears the keys in my hand.

“Lexi, how are you this morning?”

“Fine, and you?”

“Okay. Are you ready for this weekend?”

“Yes, a nice present. Just starting and now a three-day weekend.”

“You are coming to Vincent’s party, aren’t you?”

“Uh, what party? I wasn’t told.”

“At Vincent’s home in Southampton. He has one every Memorial Day weekend and July Fourth.”

“I’m not sure that I will be able to make it. I was planning on spending the entire weekend alone with Noah.”

“You can bring your fiancé. It’s for families though most people leave their children at home. It can get pretty wild at night.”

“That’s really not my thing.”

“You used to hit it pretty hard when we were in college.”

“That was years ago. I’m almost thirty.”

“You’re not past your prime, Lexi. You’re a vibrant young woman.”

“I’ll think about it.”

I didn’t have much time because Vincent was heading down the hall.

“Alexa. Just the person I want to see. Are you coming to my party tomorrow?”

“Vincent, I’m not sure. My fiancé just got back from a work trip, and I think he wants to spend a quiet weekend.”

“I won’t take no for an answer. I want to see you there. Bring him along. There is plenty to do, and I have a private beach.”

“Okay, what time?”

“Party starts around 1:00. Bring your bathing suit. Oh, and wear white, it’s a theme.”

I watched him walk away, and my eyes swing to JC who has a broad smile on his face.

“I guess I’ll see you tomorrow.”

I bet JC did this on purpose. He knew about the party and could’ve told me on Monday. I wasn’t sure Noah would want to drive out to Southampton in holiday traffic. I know he’s busy but decide the best time to tell him is now. My fingers drum on the desk as I wait for him to pick up the phone. Noah answers on the third ring.

“Lexi, what’s wrong?”

“Something has to be wrong for me to call my handsome fiancé?”

“That’s not what I meant. You just left an hour ago.”

“I’ve been requested at Vincent’s party tomorrow.”

“Oh?”

I can’t tell if Noah’s annoyed or amused. I drop the other shoe.
