“Everything alright?”

“You don’t want to know. Let’s go; I need a drink.”

In the bright lights of my office, I could see that his once fresh look had turned haggard. I guess chasing after a twenty-three-year-old will do that to you.

The cab ride to Marino’s was spent in silence. I played with my fingers, not knowing what to say to him. I was curious as to what home life was like for him. Brianna didn’t seem like the homemaker type of person. Maybe a few drinks in me would give me the courage to ask, as it turned out, I didn’t have to.

As soon as we sat down, a waiter took our drink and food order. JC deeply sighed and started telling me about his marriage.

“I’m sure you’ve guessed that Brianna is not a typical wife.”

“What exactly is a typical wife?”

“Well, one that actually does wifely duties.”

I started to laugh because I couldn’t believe he used such an antiquated statement. Wifely duties, really?

“It’s not funny. If I come home to a hot meal once a week, it’s amazing. And usually, it’s something like spaghetti or one of those microwave meals. Brianna is very good at heating things in the microwave.”

“Why don’t you give her some cooking lessons as a present?”

“Are you kidding? She would say that I was pushing her to do something she wasn’t ready for.”

“It’s cooking for heaven’s sake. You aren’t asking her to go to war.”

The waiter came back with a bottle of red wine, filled our glasses, and I watched JC down half his drink, then refill it from the bottle left on the table.

“So, tell me about your life? How do you get along with Noah?”

“Noah is wonderful. He cooks, cleans, fixes things. He designed the loft when he wanted to convert it from one big space to several rooms.”

“He’s an architect, too?”

“No, but he knows what he wants. The bathroom is wonderful. We have a double shower, a large Jacuzzi tub, double sinks, and in-floor heating.”

“Sounds like an expensive project besides Central Park West being an expensive area. I guess the security game is a lucrative career.”

“Noah does make good money, but he also invested over the years. His grandparents gave him some stocks and bonds for each birthday and event in his life. The Wilton family made money in real estate.”

“That’s his last name?”

“Yes, and it will be mine soon.”

I watched as JC’s expression hardened,, and he drained his wine glass.

“When are you getting married?”

“In October.”

“Why did you pick the fall?”

“It’s Noah’s favorite time of year.”

“I’m happy that you’re happy.”

I wasn’t so sure that was the truth. JC seemed preoccupied with the knowledge of my impending marriage and the possible demise of his.

“Thank you.”
