“I’m stressed. Sometimes I forget to have lunch.”

“You can’t do that. You’re going to get sick.”

Well, maybe if you didn’t cheat on me, I wouldn’t be so stressed.

“I know. I’ll keep it in mind when I’m at work.”

“Please do.” Noah gets up to go inside, and I watch him walk away.

Really? You’re going to start telling me what to do?

I’m tired from lack of sleep the night before, and even though it’s later in the afternoon, I decided to take a nap. The minute my head hits the pillow, I fall asleep. It’s not until a while later that I’m awakened by laughing. It sounds like Rory is back. Thanks for the consideration.

I might as well get up since it’s well past seven. I’m not sure I’m even going to sleep tonight because I slept so late. I come out to the kitchen where Noah and Rory are sitting at the breakfast bar eating chicken parmesan wedges from Antonio’s.

“Did you get me anything?”

“Of course. I wouldn’t order without getting you something.”

He slides the bag with Antonio’s Pizzeria emblazoned across the front in bright red letters, toward me. Inside is a twelve-inch wedge. I can eat the whole thing. I’m so hungry. I tear at the tinfoil and take a large bite. It’s wonderful and I relish the savory sauce as it hits my tongue. Noah reaches over to wipe a spot of it from my cheek and Rory gives me a scowl. Fuck you, little girl, he’s mine, I want to scream. I don’t care if she doesn’t like me.

After dinner, Noah cleans up, and Rory goes to her bedroom to play on her tablet. The wedge was filling, and Noah opens the freezer and takes out a large white plastic container, popping the top. Inside is lemon ice which is my favorite. I reach for the container, but he pulls it away, spooning some up and holding it out.

I take it into my mouth and seductively slide my lips over it as I pull the ice off the spoon. I can see the look on his face; it’s smoldering. Another few spoonfuls and it’s necessary for him to adjust the shorts he’s wearing. My little show has aroused him, and I run my tongue over my lemon-flavored lips.

“I wish I could take you on this counter right now,” he whispers.

I curtly smile and pull up my shirt so he can see the lacy pink bra I’m wearing. He bites his lower lip, and I smile. I wonder if we’re going to have sex tonight with little miss primrose next door to our bedroom. I leave him to relax on the couch. I channel surf but don’t find much that interests me. I’d rather read and I still have several chapters of Pride and Prejudice to finish.

I’m settled on the bed with my book, and I hear Rory talking in the room next door, probably on her cell. She’s making some very disparaging remarks about me, comparing me to her mother who apparently, I can’t hold a candle. I know I shouldn’t, but I got to the wall that we share, and I listen until I hear her end the call.

I’m fuming but more so because she said something else that tells me Noah lied about staying at his parent’s house when he was in Boston after her accident. She said that he had stayed with them and she heard them talking about getting back together. I’m dismayed and feel like an asshole. He duped me.

What do I do? Do I confront him? Now I’m wondering if that was, in fact, Vivian I saw when I was walking home. How do I know he wasn’t fucking around with her all day while I was gone? I decide to go to Noah’s office and let him know at least that his daughter is speaking ill of me. The conversation about him lying and his duplicity can wait until the little bitch leaves tomorrow.

The door is slightly open, and I push it more to poke my head in. He’s sitting at his desk with what looks like a second phone, looking back and forth between it and his primary. He’s typing, and I can only assume that he’s programming something into it. His behavior is getting more and shadier which makes me wish I hadn’t given in to my sexual desire last night.

He doesn’t see me, and I pull the door almost closed and back away, then call his name and push the door open. I see him scramble and slide the second phone into his desk drawer. What the fuck?

“Your daughter was talking to a friend about me, and it wasn’t very nice. I appreciate if you talk with her because I’m not going to allow that in my home.”

“Are you sure?”

“Noah, I’m not deaf.”

“Let’s get her in here, and we’ll straighten this out.”

“No. I prefer not to be around when you do it. I can leave. I can go see Olivia or Megan.”

He glances at his watch. “it’s almost ten. A little late for visiting, isn’t it?”

“No, not really. Either that or talk to her tomorrow. I can go to the park or something.”

“We should all sit down and get this out now.”

I sigh deeply. “No. I don’t want to deal with it at this time. She’s your daughter; you deal with her tomorrow. If this is how it’s going to be then when she comes for the two weeks next month, I’ll stay with Megan or Olivia.”

“Don’t be ridiculous. You can’t just run every time something doesn’t go your way.”
