“I know how it sounds. You can do what you want, Colby. We’re presenting the app this weekend at a big tech conference. It’s called Tech Start. I’ve put a free ticket in your name that will be at the Will Call booth when you come in. We’re presenting the app at 1:30 and I’d love for you to be there. For Nate.”

Colby made a noise in her throat, clearing out choked-up feeling from her tears, but also something of an angry grunt. “I really can’t believe you’re asking me this.”

“It’s not fair, right? I know. I’m sorry. I’m a jerk. Just know the way he feels about you…it’s no small thing. And I would rather see you guys figure this out and him apologize and make it right than to have to live with Nate for the rest of his life wishing he had just been honest with the girl he loves.”

Colby sucked in a breath at this. Loves. Zane was probably just using an expression, but it felt cruel to hear that word. He couldn’t love her. If he did, Nate would be the one calling.

“Colby!” Debbi poked her head around the side of the garage. “I’m doing all your dirty work for you! Get out here.”

“I’ve got to go,” Colby said into the phone.

“Just—please think about coming. 1:30 Saturday at the Convention Center. Oh! And before I forget, he finished up your website. I guess he started working on it during the hurricane? Anyway, he mentioned it the other day and said it was done. The e-commerce bit and everything.”

“Goodbye, Zane.” Colby hung up before he could say anything else. He had already said enough.
