“You should.”

Colby followed him to the front door and let him out. He paused on the porch, meeting her eyes with an intensity that made her insides feel like a quivering mass of nerves. Was he going to tell her?

Ugh. Her hope was so desperate and weak.

“Good to see you again, Colby,” he said.

He turned and walked down the sidewalk. Colby watched him go, feeling suddenly desperate for answers. Or maybe just desperate to see him again.

“Hey!” Colby called, before he could get to the next house. “We should catch up sometime. You know, the big life events of the past four years. Has your number changed? I think I still have the old one in my phone.”

You know, the number I called a billion times when you didn’t show up for our date.

Again, Nate looked like he wanted to say something, but he held back. His face had a strange, unreadable expression. His thumb was spinning his ring again.

“My number hasn’t changed,” he said.

Colby nodded, feeling the anger burning even hotter in her chest. But as she walked away, she also caught herself noticing how nice he looked in his uniform.
