Double damn!

“I went for an early morning swim so I parked by the beach and walked back.” That sounded lame even to her, but luckily Kirk didn’t seem too interested.

“Bastien, good to see you again. How’s the family?” Kirk shook his hand.

Mikelina wobbled into the kitchen to make herself an espresso. Damned shoes were killing her. Why couldn’t cute shoes feel good the next day when your feet were swollen like balloons?

“I see you’ve made yourself at home.” Kirk gestured to the swim trunks Bastien was wearing and his clothes still strewn all over the floor.

Mikelina stared at the two of them, hoping Bastien would cover for her.

“I couldn’t wait to get into the pool. I’m just finishing up a few things here first.” Bastien smoothly kicked his pants under the dining room table while he gestured to his laptop.

“You’re on vacation. You shouldn’t be working,” Kirk chided.

“The bachelor party doesn’t officially begin until Jace gets here in about an hour or so.”

“Well, I think you’ll be very happy here. This is my favorite property in this area. Mikelina is from South Beach and she’s got quite an itinerary lined up for you. Have you told him about Christian Dibiasi yet?”

“I was just about to,” Mikelina said, sagging against the counter. The espresso hit her system like rocket fuel, and she needed it after the few hours of sleep she got. “I’ve reserved your group a table at the Water’s Edge. It’s a blues club. Christian will be playing songs that he’s considering putting on his next album.”

“Great,” Bastien said, but he was frowning at his phone.

He’d better not complain that the gig wasn’t on the original schedule. It had been a last-minute score and she was going to surprise them with it. Of course, she hadn’t planned on last night being as intimate as it had been.

“Of course, if that doesn’t appeal to you guys, Mikelina could arrange for something else,” Kirk broke in nervously.

Was he kidding? Arrange for something else? Didn’t he realize what she’d had to go through to get those tickets? Mikelina made herself another espresso. Okay. Whatever. Whatever the client wants. But Bastien still hadn’t looked up from his phone.

“Is everything all right?” she asked.

“I’m not sure,” he said. “I just got a text from Zack. He’s one of the groomsmen. Jace took off with the limo. They’ve been trying to reach the driver, but his phone is off.”

“Do the groomsmen need a ride?” Kirk snapped his fingers at Mikelina. “Get on that.”

She raised her eyebrow at him. Just who did he think he was snapping at? She pressed her lips together and vowed that she’d speak to him later about that.

“No, don’t worry about it,” Bastien said. “Shane, another groomsman, already called in for a replacement. They’ll be about an hour behind Jace.”

“Why would he strand his groomsmen?” Mikelina asked.

“He’s a douchebag,” Bastien said, rolling his eyes.

“Oh well, he’s young.” Kirk grabbed Mikelina by the arm. “We’ll let you enjoy some peace and quiet before the guests arrive. I’ll give you a ride back to your car,” Kirk said as he practically dragged her out.

She hoped that Bastien would ask her to stay so they could get a little closure on their one-night stand, but he was too involved with his phone. She had barely enough time to grab her purse before Kirk hurried her out the door.

Bastien walked out into the pool area, closing the sliding glass door behind him to shut out his conversation. “What do you mean he’s missing?” he snarled into the phone.

Max, another groomsman and the only one with half a brain in his head, said, “I’m telling you, man. He’s on the run.”

“From what?”

“You. The whole bachelor party. I think he’s got cold feet.”

“How sure are you? Because I don’t want to break my sister’s heart by telling her that her fiancé is in the wind.”

“No, don’t call Kitty. I’m sure he’ll be at the house soon. He’s got the address. Maybe he just went out for a few drinks.”
