“I'm not sure I want to hear it. I'll have my dad wire you the money, okay? And I'm gonna stay with him for a few days. He's better now.”

He was choosing his dad over me? “He got help?”

Ethan nodded. “He did.”

“You've always been free to leave, Ethan. Despite the circumstances that brought you here, I would never force you to stay against your will. I would never force you into anything against your will. I may not be the best man in the world, but that’s not who I am. That's the difference between me and the man in that room. I can explain if you’ll let me.”

Ethan turned on his heel and left with Kira following closely behind.

Chapter 15

Ethan

I wasn't 100% sure, but I had a hunch that not being near my alpha and the stress of leaving him—albeit temporarily—launched my pregnancy symptoms into overdrive.

Orsino's driver dropped me off at my father’s house with a bag of clothes and everything Kira and the pups needed for a week. It was nice to see the place.

Frankly, I was surprised he still had it.

I needed to see the home with my own eyes to really believe things had changed.

When I left him in that room at the casino, I assumed he would return to his old life–gambling every penny he had and hoping to hit it big. I’d always held on to the shred of hope that he would get better. It seemed like I had finally gotten through to him.

My father opened the door and gave me a big hug as soon as I approached the door. The car drove off, taking my last connection to Orsino with it.

"I can't believe he let you go."

"I can't believe I left." I hesitated at the door, like crossing the threshold would sever my link to Orsino completely.

I knew I’d see him again. I had to. But I needed some time to think first.

"Come in, come in." My father tugged on my arm, and I followed him inside.

I sat down on the couch and took a good look at him.

Admittedly, my father looked better than he had in years. He was dressed in clean clothes that didn’t wreak like stale cigarette smoke and spilled whiskey.

He seemed to be checking me over. "How are you? How were things there? Did you live with the harem?"

I had to blink back tears. "No, I didn’t. I belonged to Orsino. He took care of me, and I stayed with him."

My father's eyes pinched closed. "I'm so sorry, son. I should have gotten help years ago. I should have listened to you. I promise I’ll spend the rest of my days making it up to you. You’ll never be put in that position again. I should have never let it get that far. I should have let them kill?—"

"I'm glad that you’re better and that you're going to classes. I'd love to go with you sometime.” I had thought about what to say for a long time but now none of it applied. “You don't have to be sorry for what I did to save you. I made that decision on my own, and I don’t regret it.”

“Yes, but you were in the hands of the Ferrinis. Do you know how few people can say they made it out of there alive? I mean, maybe they treat their omega harem quite well, from what I've gathered, but it's not as if they ever get to just leave. And since this was different, you were bought property, paying off my debt."

I really didn’t want to hear about the harem. With me gone, it was likely Orsino would turn to one of those omegas for comfort, like I was never there at all. As for me being property… Well, Orsino had never made me feel that way.

I cleared my throat and just dug into the logistics. "We have to get the money to Orsino. And, um, you should know that you're going to be a grandfather."

My father's eyes widened. "You and he—I mean, of course you did. I knew that he wasn't gonna just… But did he abuse you in any way?"

"Father, trust me when I say that everything that happened was my own choice." That was all he needed to know about that.

He clasped his hands together in his lap. "You'll be keeping the baby?"

I nodded and then realized I didn’t know for sure. "I don't know if Orsino will let me or what will happen, but yes, I want to have this baby."
