He can’t be serious…

I close my eyes and press my lips to his, pretending he’s Alex. As much as I hate myself for it, Chris has to believe I’m in love with him. After years of fucking other women, you’d think he would know the difference between love and lust, or at least detect when a woman isn’t into it. Unfortunately for me, I know he’ll attempt to take things further.

Being with Alex feltright. Our connection was magnetic and I rarely thought about Chris when Alex was here. He managed to imprint himself on my soul with that wicked mouth of his, promising himself to me with more than words. I miss him so much, it hurts.

Each sweep of Chris’ tongue across mine chips away at the small part of me that thought I could salvage this—all of it is fake. He doesn’t want me, never has.

Except for as a trophy that puts out occasionally.

I’m supposed to be his wife. Do I really have another choice?

Chris reaches between us, his fingers dipping into the waistband of my panties, and I plant my handson his chest, pulling back. “I’m on my period,” I remind him. My excuse will only buy me so much time, I only have a few days before I will have to sleep with Chris to keep up appearances. The broken heart card can be played a few times before it’s no longer believable.

“Are you feeling okay? Do you need anything?” His concern is suspicious. The last time he made a move and discovered I was on my period, he ran off to Miami with Cara the next morning on an ‘unexpected work trip.’

“No, I’m all right. Nothing a hot shower can’t fix.”

He slides out of bed, rounds it, and offers his hand. As I hesitantly take it, he smiles wide. “Quick shower and breakfast, then let’s spend the day with our toes in the sand. No plans.”

Chrisalwayshas a plan. He’s driven and meticulous—none of this makes sense. It has to be calculated.

With a raised eyebrow, my curiosity gets the best of me. “Since when are you able to handle a day with no plans?”

“True. I’ll probably only last an hour.” Helping me out of bed, he pulls my body flush with his. “But it’s a start.”

Chapter 30

Alex

Despite being in one of the most comfortable beds I’ve ever slept in, last night had to be the worst night of sleep I’ve had in a long time. Waking up without Jaclyn didn’t help. I’m obsessed with her, and now I have to find a way to make her the leader of the free world?

How did I get saddled with this?

I rub the sleep from my eyes and grab my phone from the nightstand. Three missed texts. The first is from Finn.

Finn Gallagher

Your wardrobe will be delivered at 7:30.

I check the time, and I have an hour before they’ll be delivered. After typing out a reply thanking him for arranging it, I check the next message from Ned.

Ned Collins

Finn and Mickey expect you ready by 9. A car will be downstairs.

Of course Finn wouldn’t send me clothes out of the goodness of his heart. The third missed text has my heart stuck in my throat.

Jaclyn Blake

I miss you.

It was sent twenty minutes ago. With the time difference, it’s 12:30 a.m. there. Throwing caution to the wind, I risk replying, even though it may wake her.

Have you been a good little wife for me?

Dancing bubbles appear at the bottom of the screen. They disappear, and I can’t take the anticipation, hitting the call button just to hear her voice. It rings once but she sends me to voicemail.

Is he next to you?
