Chapter 9 - Maddox

Lacie tossed the car keys at me.

“I can’t drive right now,” she grinned. “I feel like I’m drunk.”

“I tend to have that effect on women.”

“Yeah, right,” she laughed, rolling her eyes. “Come on, let’s go.”

We drove away from the lookout and back towards my house. For the first time since we left them, I thought of Veronica and Carter and wondered what they’d been up to. Lacie checked her phone as if she were thinking the same thing.

“No word from Veronica. She must be enjoying herself.” She paused, looking over at me. “Maddox,” she started. I glanced at her and moved my hand to her thigh.

“What’s up?”

“I… I don’t usually do this. I mean, sleep with clients. Or men I don’t know. This…”

“Hey,” I said gently, squeezing my hand on her thigh as I kept my eyes on the road. “Me neither, for what it’s worth.”

She snorted, and I glanced at her. She arched her eyebrow at me. I grinned.

“Alright, yeah, there tend to be women around when you’re a musician. But I wouldn’t…” I sighed. “You’re different.”

I could feel her eyes on me, and my pulse quickened. What was I saying? It was true, of course, but what did I actually mean?

It was different with Lacie. We had an instant connection from the moment she walked into the rehearsal space. It was like we were drawn to each other. Everything seemed brighter and more exciting with her around.

Maybe it was the post-orgasm bliss talking. Maybe it was the fact that for the first time in a long time, I didn’t feel on edge.

Maybe it was just that she was a beautiful girl, and she was giving me all her attention.

But I didn’t think so.

We pulled in the driveway to my house and I got out. Her mouth dropped when she saw the size of our mansion. She looked at me, eyes wide, and then swept her eyes around the neighborhood. You could hardly see the next house over. It was nestled in some trees, a good distance away from ours.

She nodded to the car. “You sure this thing is safe here? Seems like a pretty rough neighborhood.”

“No hubcap is safe in this place,” I grinned, holding my arm out to her. She hooked her arm in mine and leaned her cheek on my shoulder in a small, intimate movement that felt perfectly natural, and we walked towards the house.

When we entered, the whole place was quiet.

“Hello?” I called out, glancing into the living room. I could see the light on in the kitchen at the back of the house, and I led Lacie back there.

The bottle opener was on the counter, with a couple empty beer bottles. I glanced around, listening for any evidence of Carter and Veronica.

Then, we heard a huge scream and a splash, followed by a fit of giggles. Lacie’s eyes grew and she ran towards the back door, opening it wide and running out.

Veronica was in our huge pool with Carter. He was behind her with his arms wrapped around her, kissing her neck. They both looked up when they heard us come out.

“We interrupting something?” Lacie asked, laughing. She took a step forward and frowned, glancing at the pool chairs with piles of clothes on and around them. “Are you naked?”

Veronica laughed. “Well I wasn’t going to jump in with all my clothes on, was I?”

“Come on,” I said to Lacie, grinning. “I’ll show you the hot tub.” We walked away to more sounds of splashing and giggling. Lacie looked up at me, shaking her head.

“Did you drug all of us? Is this some alternate reality? What is going on? We’re like a bunch of horny teenagers!”

I laughed, leading her down a stone path towards the gazebo on the far end of the yard. Our huge hot tub was underneath it, overlooking all of Los Angeles. We’d installed a small bar on the back side of the gazebo, making this area the perfect little oasis to come in the evenings. Lacie gasped as I turned the hot tub on. It roared to life, jets of water soon swirling through the tub.
