Is Lettie marking her territory? If she is, there’s no need, I’ve always belonged to her.

Chapter Seventeen

LETTIE

“Come on, Greathouse. You promised me we would dance all night.” I lock my fingers through Dane’s.

“Have fun tonight,” Dane says, smiling at Daisy, and her panties are probably disintegrating, I know mine are. Just thinking about Dane Greathouse’s fingers sliding through my private parts makes me wet all over again.

I have to be the real Lettie tonight, not the medicated version. Dane can’t see how much his touch affected me, so I giggle as I pull him toward the dance floor. The band plays their version of a Prince song, and it reminds me of Mrs.Greathouse playing music while she cleaned or cooked, so I have a fondness for 80s and 90s music.

While all the older people stand in groups, singing, I raise my arms above my head, bouncing on my toes, needing to let loose.

Dane grins.

Yep. Not going to have panties left at this rate.

I move closer to him as he shifts his weight from one foot to another. To my surprise, he lifts his hands above my head to meet mine. His arms are bent, being a foot taller than me, and then his hands slide down my naked arms and skim my sides before resting on the curvature of my waist.

My skin pimples, and the fast tempo of the music feeds my desire. Pinning me in place with his gaze, his physical closeness allows me to feel his heat and energy while fueling my need for more of Dane Greathouse.

The band rolls right into one fast song after another. Dane spins me around, dancing with my back to his chest. It’s not romantic, but it’s fun as he swings me from side to side in jest. I’ve never been as happy as I am at this moment. Hoping this part of our relationship won’t change but maybe, we can add in some sexual benefits. Something tells me that Dane has a lot to offer. I chuckle thinking about it.

“What?” he whisper-shouts into my ear.

He’s so close. I tilt my head and look at him. “Just thinking about how I can’t wait for …”

“For what?” The corners of his mouth trend up, and something tells me he understands what I mean.

I grin. “Whatever’s next.” My voice is huskier than normal, and his arms tighten around me as he places a kiss on my cheek.

My body temperature rises, and a flush spreads over my skin. It isn’t a normal kiss on the cheek. Open-lipped. Perfectly moist. It’s a your-driving-me-crazy-and-I-can’t-wait-to-get-you-alone kiss on the cheek.

And I swear God is watching because the band rolls into a slow song. We stay back to chest for a few beats before he spins me to face him.

He places my hands on his chest and circles my waist with his arms. “You’re the most beautiful person in the room.”

“Come on, Greathouse, you can do better than that,” I tease, attempting to make light of the compliment.

He winks and holds a lopsided smile. “Oh, I’ll be glad to show you how much better I can do.”

“I think you’ve had too much to drink. You’re acting like we’re…”

“We’re what?” he asks with his lips ghosting over the shell of my ear.

But I remember his words, nothing changes. “Best friends.”

Chapter Eighteen

DANE

Just the thought of losing Lettie as my best friend causes my blood to stop pumping. I know I’m being selfish, wanting more and after kissing her, really kissing her, I’m done for. And I’m ready to risk it.

My forehead rests against hers. “We’re best friends, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t want to kiss you again.”

Her fingertips crawl into mine, and she leads me away from the dance floor. She stops at the elevator, takes off her high-heeled sandals, and slings them into her hand.

“Do your feet hurt?” I ask as I swipe my thumb over the outside of her hand.
