He snuffs, turning human beneath my finger. The white and tan shades of his fur pull back to reveal blazing crimson in his cheeks. “Brittny.”

I don’t move my boop from his nose. “Yes, Ollie?”

Tilting his head back, he licks my fingertip. “Don’t do that.”

“Sorry.” I flush.

He averts his eyes. “It’s all right.”

I shift my weight from one leg to the other. “Did you…did you just lick my finger?”

“Maybe.”

“Innocently?”

He blinks. “Well.” He blinks once more. “I wouldn’t be able to do it again. Now that you’ve mentioned it.” Rising, he offers me his hand—looking like a faerie prince backdropped by lush green leaves and raining sun. “Come on. Don’t you think you’ve bullied me enough?”

“Bullied you?” I slip my hand into his and let him help me up. “I’m not trying to bully you. I think you’re wonderful. You should teach me how to shift once everything works out and I’m fully werecanine. I want to turn into a fox, too.”

The tips of his ears blister. “You’d make a lovely fox.”

“How come your fur isn’t light brown like your hair and instead it’s white and tan like your skin?”

“Because I like it better that way.”

“So you can control it?”

He smiles softly. “Yeah.”

“That’s so cool.”

“Is it?”

I nod. “You’re amazing.”

“If you think I’m amazing, just wait until you see Faerie.”

“How much farther?”

He lifts his chin toward the steep cut of a rock face. “There.” He sighs. “I hope Cael’s not busy. I can never keep track of when he’s holding court, but it’s too quiet out here for it to be right now.”

Court? So this is like a proper royalty situation? “You’re allowed to just talk to your ruler whenever you want?”

Ollie swings my arm between us as we get closer to the mossy rock. “Once upon a time, I was…a courtesan.”

My eyes widen. “Oh.”

“Yeah.”

I wince. “Like…for—”

“Noo. Nope. No, Brittny.” He swears. “—no.” Ollie downs a deep breath and sweeps back his hair. “Cael’s…a prince. In every sense. He exudes power and grace, at least on the Faerie side of things. He’s useless in the human world, but in Faerie? He’s clever and in utter control with this—” Ollie flails his free hand. “—perfect air about him. I don’t think he’s ever looked at a woman and thought her attractive because he hasn’t found his mate yet, and he’s flawlessly committed to whoever that person is.”

“Wow.”

“I know. It’s like he knows the things you’re only supposed to know after you get your breath stolen by a mere glimpse of…” Ollie’s eyes lock on mine, and his words choke off. “I forgot. I’m talking about you.”

I smile. “Do continue.”
