Chapter 19

~~~~~~~~~~~~
We’re off to see the faerie prince, because because because.
The prince.
We ask the prince.
My mind spun with that information all night, and I’m still half asleep as Ollie and I walk through the woods toward what Ollie has called the palace trod. My question of how will I know when we get there? got the marvelous answer you won’t.
So. You know.
I’m doing great when it comes to embracing my faerie lineage.
I am absolutely going to thrive in this environment.
Twisting my fingers together, I follow Ollie’s back as he meanders through the trees, hands tucked in the pockets of his cargo shorts.
Pregnant silence weighs all around us, a trickle of something magical hanging just beyond the horizon. When I can’t take it anymore, I blurt, “Is Prince Cael nice?”
“Yes.”
“I’m not really familiar with these sorts of things. At least not like Alana is. There’s no…” What are the words she likes to throw around when she reads about faerie princes? “…political intrigue, right?”
“There are politics. I don’t know how intriguing you’ll find them. Most of them are external, too. Cael doesn’t allow irritations within his bounds.”
How positively vague.
“We’re going to Faerie, right?” I ask.
“Correct.”
“What’s it like?”
Tilting his head back, Ollie watches the overhanging canopy, searching the leaves as they rustle in a breeze. “Tremendous.”
Tremendous. That sounds somewhat overwhelming. “Is your family there?”
“They shouldn’t be. Their territory is in Russia, which is many trods away, several of them waterlogged. We are only going to Cael’s territory, which is—by far—more welcoming than any other I’ve come across. He’s…crafted his domain in a very specific way.”
I blink and slow, falling far enough behind that Ollie stops and looks back at me.
Sunlight washes across him, and my heart stumbles at the sight of gold flecks lighting up his brown eyes.
“Are you well, sunshine?”
“They have territory in Russia?”
“Yes.”
“You’re from Russia?”
“?a.”
My mind goes blank.
“I speak English with an American accent, and I’ve had a lot of time to practice.”
