Ollie jabs his finger into Cael’s chest. “Listen here, I like to sleep and be irresponsible. We are not the same.”

“Yeah, but I love you anyway.”

Ollie flinches when Cael moves in to join the cuddle pile.

“We all love you anyway.” Zylus grins, displaying his fangs.

A prince, a vampire, and a fox were hugging on the floor in a royal dining hall.

It sounds like the opening of a joke.

But, one thing’s for sure, it’s some kind of story. A really weird one, probably. Like a fanfiction that went drastically wrong…

Or entirely right.

Maybe, compared to everything else, it’s not so weird.

All things considered, I am the proud owner of Pomeranian floof, wearing a dress sewn from magic, sitting on the floor in a castle that feels like a first home.

Under those circumstances, this might not be weird at all.

This might just be my new normal.

“Are you ready?” Cael whispers into Ollie’s hair.

He puffs out a breath. “Regardless of whether or not I win, this will end poorly. You know that right?”

Cael hums. “Yes, well, I am quite familiar with narcissists. It is entirely up to you, of course.”

“What do you mean?” Ollie asks. “You struck a bargain and called my oath to you as my liege into question. I can’t refuse without breaking that promise and exiling myself.”

Cael snuggles him. “I said I had a favor to request. A request isn’t a command that calls upon the binding nature of your oath to me as your ruler. If your brothers have a problem with your backing out and annoy me enough, I’ll lay any in their pack who defies submission to waste.”

Ollie shoves out of both Cael’s and Zylus’s arms, eye twitching.

Cael pouts.

Zylus averts his eyes when Ollie’s attention whips toward him. “You…”

“I cannot be held responsible just because you weren’t paying attention.” The vampire lifts his hands, as though absolving himself of all crime. “Just be happy I told Willow I refused to record this whole situation on your enchanted camera.”

“Ah? Really? I should be glad for that, huh?” Ollie rakes his fingers through his hair as a final irritated tear streams down his cheek. “Sometimes I cannot stand you two.”

“I’m well aware.” Cael’s wings flitter, mischief and magic in his every centimeter. “But that, Ollie, is why we are sitting down.”

Ollie’s eyes roll, and he elbows Zylus in the side before looking at me. Pulling his hand from his hair, he wipes his thumb beneath my eye. “You have been the most inconvenienced by this whole ordeal, so consider my putting myself at the mercy of your wishes a fragile attempt at atonement. What would you like me to do?”

I chew my lip. “Honestly?”

“Honesty is all you can offer.”

I exhale a laugh. “Right.” Clasping his hand, I smile, prettily, like a wicked little Pomeranian. “Crush them.”
