Ollie sighs. “For Cael, probably.”

“Pollux is spoopy,” Zylus murmurs.

Ollie snorts, nudging him in the side with his elbow. “Spoopy?”

“My dearest of darlings has taught me many important things. Consider my vocabulary broadened.”

“Does Pollux have a daughter?” I ask.

Zylus stops short and looks at me. “What?”

I blink. “It’s just…” The air feels funny. Heavy. Scented. I don’t know how to place every emotion yet, but if I had to guess, this one would be unease.

Funny.

Maybe some of my difficulty communicating with people has stemmed from my not having access to senses like these that warn me when to tread carefully or assure me when everything’s fine.

Cautiously, I say, “Last time I saw him, he had a grocery bag with Uncrustables. And there were youthful giggles emanating from beyond the front door.”

Ollie and Zylus exchange a look.

Ollie clears his throat. “Um…as far as I know, unseelie don’t have mates.”

“And as far as I know, no child would be able to withstand his presence unless they were unseelie, too.”

“So he has a kid with another unseelie? That doesn’t seem all that shocking given the fact I am the distant product of seelies having affairs with humans.” Which, by the way, is a pro point in Willow’s theory concerning the existence of a “Zeus.” Interesting. Very interesting.

Has this fanfiction turned toward mythology retelling?

Surely not.

That would be crazy foreshadowing that no one is ready for.

Zylus starts walking again. “I would know if Cael had allowed another unseelie within his domain. His responsibility is not just to his own. Even in the human realm, he protects all beings from anything that might do them harm. That’s why I’m stationed to look out for Mountain Vale on this side.”

Ooh. Politics.

This seems more Alana’s speed, suddenly.

“So…how would he have a child without another unseelie present?”

“If he has a child at all without reporting it to Cael, that wouldn’t be ideal,” Zylus notes. “How is another thing entirely.”

“It couldn’t be his. I doubt Pollux would…” Ollie lifts his free hand to his mouth and coughs. “Well. You know.”

“He also wouldn’t adopt a stray seelie or human if he found one, knowing how horrible it would be for them to be around him.” Zylus’s brows knit. “Bringing a stray unseelie in without reporting it would also not bode well for him.”

I wince. “Have I caused problems by mentioning it?”

“No, noo.” Ollie winces. “Well.” He grimaces. “Maybe.”

“Probably not,” Zylus says before my heart can plummet to my toes. “Pollux is…”

“A good guy,” Ollie interjects. “He wouldn’t do anything that would harm anyone else.”

“Permanently,” Zylus murmurs.

Concern fills Ollie’s eyes. “You’re too hard on him.”
