“That is an aphrodisiac used to make some faerie wines. You retain human blood. It’s a bad mix.”

“Double rude.”

Pollux closes his eyes, releases a strained breath, and returns his attention to the path as the trees break to reveal sheer ashen stone.

“Are we there yet?” Willow asks after a moment.

He mutters, “I assume you are making a joke.”

“It was a very good joke.”

“It was subpar.”

“Ow, my feelings.”

Shaking his head, Pollux sweeps aside a curtain of dark moss that hides the open maw of a cave. I hesitate half a second before holding my breath and pushing inside. After three unsteady steps in the darkness, I’m in the city, sandwiched between two buildings, looking ahead at familiar streets.

Greenville.

“That’s it?” I whisper, turning off the music on my phone.

Pollux drops his shoulder against one building and crosses his arms. “Did you want a longer trek?”

“Yes, please,” Willow comments. “On the return trip, I want less visibility and more euphoria plants.”

“I can make that happen, so don’t tempt me.”

Dialing Alana, I step away from the scary man and Willow as their back and forth turns ludicrous—Willow wants sheer cliffs on both sides; Pollux can do active volcanoes. Apparently, Willow doesn’t want her bones incinerated; she wants them hanging off pikes to act as a warning for future travelers.

She disturbs him.

Imagine that.

Willow disturbs the unseelie fae born of pure fear.

It’s nice to know I’m in such good company.

“Are you within reach?” Alana finally picks up, dragging my attention off the growing insanity.

“Yep. Just walked out of an alley across from our favorite Walmart after hiking through a forest with all black plants and the occasional splash of purple wine berry.”

Alana snorts. “Brag more, why don’t you? Did you get me a wine berry?”

“Nope. Sorry.”

A car door shuts. “Aw. I deserve a wine berry for all the work I put in each day.”

“Didn’t you tell me you only have one well-behaved dog right now?”

“Yeah.”

“And she’s a mini hot dog?”

“Well behaved just means does not pee inside. This mini hot dog wakes up at four consistently every morning and barks to be let out because the crazy lady I’m sitting for gets up early to do yoga.” Alana blows out a breath. “Do you ever get this crippling sense that you’re the only one in the world who doesn’t have your life together?”

“Yeah, the mention of someone doing scheduled yoga before the sun comes up will do that to you, A.”

“It’s kind of insulting.” Alana sighs, despondent. “The friend who came with you, does she like Olive Garden? I need bread sticks.”
