The slight hitch in his breathing made me look at him. His eyes were alive with intensity, their hoods drooped low. “Don't be scared,” he muttered, “I'll take good care of you.”

Nodding, I slipped my hand in his and nudged him gently. “You lead the way.”

“Always.” Squeezing my hand, he pulled away and started to walk, stepping in front of me every time I tried to draw level with him.

The hotel doors loomed, opening for stunning women who dripped in bling and handsome men who fiddled with their expensive watches. I kept my gaze low, not wanting to make eye contact with those who were higher up on the wealth chain than I. It wasn’t that I was ashamed of my wage, it was quite fair considering my experience, but I wasn’t like them… in any way, shape or form.

Joseph guided me through the door and onto the pavement outside. He marched to the right, pulling me with him as he headed straight for the building next door. A doorman nodded, stepping back to allow us to pass into another marble lobby. This time, there was only a small empty desk.

I was about to speak when the doorman called for Joe.

“The elevator isn’t working,” he said, “the guy’s on his way. Sorry!”

Joseph stalled, glancing between the elevator and the front door. I bit my bottom lip as he worked out what to do, his eyebrows raising when he finally looked at me.

“You want to go up the stairs?” His finger pulled my bottom lip from my teeth. “I can carry you some of the way.”

Rolling my eyes, I smiled. “You don’t need to carry me, I’m perfectly capable of walking up a few steps unattended.”

A smirk crossed his face before he made his way to the door next to the elevator. Okay, so I had been nonchalant about the stairs, and my fitness, but what if he was on the top floor? Buildings in London were fucking tall.

Joseph held the door open as I walked through, starting up the steps immediately once I was beside him. Even a posh building couldn’t glam up an emergency stairwell. The walls on each landing were glass, the whole pane showing the street outside. I paused on the first landing to look out. My feet ached, despite only climbing one flight. My small heels were not practical to scale a mountain, they’d have to go.

“Are you okay?” Joseph asked, coming back down a few steps to stand beside me.

“The city is beautiful, isn’t it?” I said, kicking off my shoes and picking them up. “I’ve never seen a view like this, even though we’re low to the floor. These streets are just so pretty.”

His hand slunk around my waist as he stood behind me. “We better not waste time, the view is even better up there.”

He pointed upwards and stood back, beckoning for me to go on. I did as I was told, following him up another three flights of stairs. My breath was heavy and my feet beginning to chafe from the cold floor.

“Are you ready for me to carry you?” Joseph asked, his breath normal and his cheeks not even the slightest shade of pink.

Licking my lips, I tilted my head to the side. “I doubt you’d be able to carry me far, I’m not the most lightest of feathers.”

His growl resounded around us as he turned and bent his knees, encouraging me to climb onto his back. Ah, okay, that wasn’t the most romantic carry in the world, but I clambered on anyway, giggling as he started up the next flight. He was jogging with me on his back, my boobs rubbing on his suit jacket and my thighs held tight by his thick hands. The jiggling made me laugh louder as he took me up another two flights.

“What’s so funny?” he asked, his breath only slightly panting by now.

Clinging to his shoulders, I replied. “It’s like you’re a firefighter, rescuing me from a fire.”

He paused on the next landing and dropped me to the floor. “Is that so?”

Turning to look at me, he took a deep breath, his gaze caressing my face and instantly putting a fire in my belly. The flames in my stomach danced merrily, waving a happy goodbye to my inexperience. My V card was about to get posted. Just as soon as we reached this bloody apartment.

“I’ve admired your work from afar,” Joseph said, “Now I want to admire you up close.”

Tension heated the small area as Joe pushed me against the wall, his lips descending onto mine. My arms were pinned as he pressed his hands on the wall, either side of me. I was trapped, unable to reach for him or control the depth of our kiss. My chest tightened as I shuffled, letting him know that I wasn't comfortable. His tongue pushed into my mouth, making my knees weak and distracting me.

The clunk of an opening door jolted us and Joe stepped back, smiling at the two men who had appeared on the landing. Their eyes widened when they studied me. What was it? Had my lipstick gone everywhere?

Grabbing my hand and dragging me towards the door, Joe held my waist as he turned to stare at the men. They nodded, sharing some unspoken message. I was too naive to understand what they'd just communicated between them, but it made me nervous.

“Do you know them?” I asked, allowing Joe to lead me into the corridor and towards the apartment.

Shrugging, he unlocked the door with the key and entered the hallway. “I've seen them around.”

I halted abruptly, right in the doorway. “Is that because you bring all of your women here?”
