My cock jumps at the thought. To keep myself from going completely hard, I turn away from her and go back down the stairs.

“I’ll wait in the...truck.” I say, walking quickly to hide the almost full tent that is popping up in my jeans.

“Okay...” I hear her voice behind me as I walk away.

Getting into the SUV, I start it up and wait only a few minutes before they climb inside.

“Thank you.” She says a few minutes down the road and I glance over at her.

“Welcome.” I say just as we are getting into town. I want to ask her questions about her life to try to figure out what she has been through but I know there’s not enough time. Instead I make the decision to try to talk to her after her shift is over and I pick her up at the end of the night.

Parking at Bella’s Brew, they both get out quickly but Kimmie looks back at me with that same smile she has had since I picked her up.

“Any news about my car? I meant to ask before we got here but it slipped my mind.” Her cheeks flush red and I wonder why.

“It’s...a lot of things. I’ll...come by...later to...go over all of it.” Not wanting to tell her that she is better off just getting a new car.

“Okay. See you.” She says, shutting the door.

I watch her as she walks all the way to the door and wait until she’s inside before pulling away.

Kimmie

Walking into work, I send Remmy to a table in the back and make my way to the kitchen where I find Bella at the stove with her mom who helps her out a lot.

“Kimmie! Glad you’re finally here so I have someone to talk to.” Bella says.

“What exactly am I? Chopped liver?” Her moms huffs next to her and Bella just laughs.

“Kimmie doesn’t say shit to me that I’ll need more therapy to get past.” Bella answers while her mom just laughs.

I watched how they interacted yesterday before her mom left for the day. I envy what they have together.

It’s something that I’ve never known myself considering that I never had a mother. At least not one that I remember anyway.

Growing up, there was no other woman to take the place of what a mother would be. The only woman I ever remember being nice to me were the ones at the hospital where Remmy was born.

I could tell that they knew something was wrong and I was scared they were going to take my baby. Just like I knew Hugo would have for other reasons.

“Come to my office. I need to talk with you for a moment.” Bella says and my stomach flip flops at the thought that I may be getting fired anyway.

Walking into the room, she turns and shuts the door behind us, making my nervousness even worse.

“I’m getting fired, aren’t I?” I say.

“What? No! That’s not why I asked you to come in here.” She shakes her head. “I asked you in here to talk to you. About your social security number.” She looks at me expectantly.

In all the craziness that has happened since last night, I completely forgot that she was needing that. My brain works quickly trying to come up with a reason that I don’t have it.

“Please don’t come up with a lie for my sake. You can be honest with me. You’re not going to lose this job even if I need to pay you off the books.” Her comment has me looking at her fully with wide eyes.

I open my mouth to speak but nothing comes out so I shut it again.

“Can you at least tell me what or who you are running from?” She asks softly, drawing my eyes back to her.

“Remmy’s father.” I finally answer, making the decision to trust her with some of it.

“How long have you been running?” She asks without any judgment on her face.
