Justice had been done, and my father and brother had been avenged.

I waited for the piercing pain, but it never came. I opened my eyes, confused, thinking that maybe I had missed the impact and I was already dead.

I froze.

Andres stood with his back facing me, blocking the path of the bullet.

“No!” My heart broke apart. “Andres!”

He turned his head to the side to look over his shoulder. I saw the faintest hint of a smile on his lips. “You okay, amor?”

And then he dropped to the ground, his gun clattering beside him.

I dropped to my knees as the blood oozed out of the bullet hole in his chest. I took his head and cradled on my lap. I pressed down onto his chest, trying to slow down the bleeding.

“Amor…” his voice came out low and weak, a stark contrast to what it normally was like. “Amor…”

“Sh, don’t speak. Help is coming. Just… just stay alive.” My voice cracked at the end, the emotion taking over. I could feel the dread filtering into my system little by little. “Andres, please. Hold on, okay? Hold on.”

“Are you okay, amor?”

Tears welled in my eyes. “Stop asking if I’m okay, you idiot! You’re bleeding into my hands right now! Save your strength and don’t talk.”

Where were they? Andres had said they weren’t far behind. Surely Valerio should have been here by now.

He reached a shaky hand toward my face and cupped the side of it. A weak smile found its way to his lips.

“Mi amor,” he all but whispered. His chest rose and fell slowly. “It’s okay.”

I shook my head, tears streaming down my face. “No, it isn’t. whatever you’re trying to say, save it. Especially if it’s a goodbye. You don’t get to die unless it’s by my hand, remember? You said that to me. I’m saying it to you now. You don’t get to die. You get me, Andres Valdez? You have to live!”

“It’s okay, amor…”

His eyes fluttered closed.

“Andres!”

The last shard of my heart shattered, and my entire world stopped.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

Savina’s POV

The first thing I noticed was the pain. It was this throbbing kind of pain that hit against the inside of my cranium. The next thing was the sharp antiseptic scent of the chemicals in the room.

My body felt like it was being pressed down by a truck. I breathed in, deeply trying to take in as much air as my lungs would allow, but my sides ached.

“Savina?” A muffled voice filtered into my ears. I could barely hear it above the noise in my head.

That’s when I felt a hand come over my wrist. The touch was light and soft.

“Savina?” There it was again, but this time came out clearer. “Vina, open your eyes for me. Please.”

Mama.

What was she doing here? Where was here? I had no idea what was happening. The last thing I remembered was…

My eyes snapped open. The harsh fluorescent lights from above blinded me for a moment, forcing me to close them shut again.
