“Right.” Enjell agreed. “So why isn’t he doing that?”

My eyes rolled as I took a sip of my wine. “Peyton said he won’t send her any money because he knows it will be traced and thinks her parents will try to find him and get him locked up.”

Mama scoffed. “Then he needs to meet her and give her some cash. He deserves to pay for what he did one way or another. By law, he needs to be in prison, but he doesn’t deserve to just… get away with doing nothing.”

“That’s what’s been frustrating me!” I felt lighter the longer we talked. “I felt bad as hell, but at the same time, I’m like, this girl has parents who are trying to do right by her, but she’s so busy trying to protect her baby daddy. She almost got an innocent man locked up in the process. If he was that worried about the consequences, he shouldn’t have had sex with a seventeen-year-old. And now, she’s burning her bridges with people because she doesn’t want anyone trying to tell her how to raise her baby. She’s giving bits and pieces at a time to Peyton, but she finally told him that the godmother complained about her not doing anything around the house because she’s always holding the baby. No one else can hold the baby without him crying.”

“That’s what happens when you spoil a baby and don’t allow them to get used to anyone else,” Mama said. “With her being in school and working, she’s going to need help. Not too many people have the nerves to deal with a baby who cries to no end. If he’s comfortable at the daycare, that’s where he needs to be. I get where the godmama is coming from.”

“And with that being her house, she ain’t wrong for not wanting to put up with the crying or arguing with Brooklyn,” Enjell said.

“Destined is spoiled, but he’s easily entertained. I cut the TV on, and that makes him stop crying. That’s why I want her and her godmother to talk. Hell, I’ll buy him one of those little chair things so he can stand up and watch TV. Easy fix. That’s not a big enough reason for her to not go back over there to me… especially when it’s literally the perfect location for her to take care of work and school.”

“I agree,” Mama said. “You’re not a bad person, and you’re not wrong. You stay on him about this, Malay. If I need to get the baby while you work next week, I will, but don’t give him more than a month to get them out of your house. The mediator thing is a great idea. Make him stand on that.”

The doorbell rang, and the low, “Oop,” Enjell released had me eyeing her skeptically.

“Who is that?” Mama asked as she stood.

I kept my eyes on my sister as she avoided mine. “What did you do, Enjell?”

“Huh?”

“You heard me!”

“Well… Aspen may have told me you blocked him. I told him I’d see why since we were together. He… asked for my location and I-I…”

“I know you didn’t tell that crazy ass nigga where we were.”

“I didn’t.” She huffed as her chin jutted out in defiance. “I just sent him my location.”

“Enjell!”

“I like him for you!”

“It doesn’t matter! I’m in a whole relationship.”

“So what! Peyton is wasting your time just like Gino was wasting mine.”

Groaning, I palmed my face as my head shook. I hadn’t told her about my and Aspen’s FaceTime, so there was no way she could understand my distress.

“Uh, baby.” Mama’s hand gripped my shoulder. “Somebody is at the door for you.”

“Damn you, Enjell.” Her giggling caused me to snatch her up by her shirt, which only made her laugh harder. “I should make you go and get rid of him.”

“Girl, please.” She shoved my hand down from her shirt. “That man ain’t leaving until he sees you.”

Deciding to just get it over with, I headed out of the kitchen. All I could do was chuckle and shake my head. I couldn’t believe he’d gone through all of this just because I blocked him. As I headed down the hall, my irritation mellowed out and was replaced with flattery.

Our eyes locked, and as he always did, he took me in from head to toe. Aspen looked good as hell. There was something godly about a black man in white.

As soon as I was in front of him, he said, “What you want?”

My head jerked slightly and brows wrinkled in confusion. “What do you mean? What do you want? You’re the one here for me.”

His chuckle was sexy as he shifted on his feet and closed the distance between us, forcing me to look up at him.

“Nah, you must want something since you blocked me and forced me to pull up on you.”
