“I found what I wanted.” I closed the space between us. “Or should I say who.”

That caused her smile to return as she wrapped her arms around herself. “That was cute. I needed that. I’m sad.”

“You wanna talk about why?”

“Not really. It’s nothing that can be fixed. I’ll be fine.”

“You sure? I’m pretty good at fixing things.”

“I’m sure.

“Cool. Let me take you to lunch.”

After a brief moment of consideration, Malaysia gave me a quick bob of her head before heading toward the back. A few minutes later, she was coming back with her purse. My eyes trailed her frame as she walked closer. The cream-colored vest against her skin was a nice contrast. High-waisted jeans brought attention to her small waist and wide hips. She had on them kitten heels that I usually didn’t like, but hers were actually nice looking and didn’t have that patent leather vintage vibe.

“You look beautiful, Malay.”

She looked down at herself absently as she blushed. “Thanks. You look… dark yet handsome.”

That made me chuckle as I put a hand on the small of her back and led her out of the store. I was dressed in all black, so I understood why she said that. After she locked up, I drove us up the street to the seafood restaurant she said she wanted to go to.

“Don’t flirt with me,” she said as I cut the car off. “I’m still in a relationship, and this is just lunch.”

Chuckling, I looked over at her. “I’m not going to flirt with you, because you’re sad, not because you’re in a relationship. I told you I don’t give a fuck about that shit.”

Her eyes rolled as I got out of the car then went to the other side of my Camaro to let her out. I should have stepped back to give her space, but I couldn’t move. Our bodies were inches apart, and because of our height difference, I had to crane my neck slightly to look down at her. She smelled good—warm—like dessert.

“Aspen,” she called quietly.

“Hmm?”

“I-I’m faithful.”

“That’s good.”

“So this can’t happen.”

“Do you want it to?”

She swallowed hard and looked away. “I’m attracted to you, but nothing can come of it. I want us to get along because of Enjell and Dejvi but just as friends.” When her eyes returned to mine, she added, “Okay?”

I would play nice for now, but I was aggressive when it came to getting what I wanted. My pursuit of her would be no different.

Once we were in the restaurant and settled, she got a text from Denali, telling her she was going home and that Malaysia didn’t have to return to work. I asked her what her plans were for the rest of the day, and she said she’d probably go and chill with her parents once I took her to get her car.

Since her day was now free, she got a margarita with an extra shot. I didn’t like mixed drinks, so I got cognac on the rocks. Our time together was brief and comfortable. She didn’t talk much, and I gave her that because it was clear she had something on her mind and heart. It was my desire to take it away for her, but she wasn’t comfortable letting me just yet. Instead, she allowed time with me to be a brief distraction.

By the time our food arrived, I was curious about what she’d gotten. She added wings to her seafood bag, and that was some shit I’d never seen before.

“You got big back eating habits, but you’re small. I like that.”

The yelp of laughter she released as she covered her mouth made me smile… even though I was dead serious. Her bag already had crab legs and shrimp, plus broccoli, potatoes, and corn.

“You lucky we’re not at my house. Otherwise, I’d be adding noodles too.”

“Shit, that ain’t no problem with me. I like to eat too.”

Her smile was comfortable as she watched me slide my hand into her bag.
