“I’m sweet,” he whispered, winking.

“You are, but we can’t tell your fans that now, can we? It’s that bad boy image of yours that gets panties thrown at you.”

“Hm, if I’m not mistaken, I thought I recognized some of yours,” he replied, sliding his hand secretly up inside my skirt until his fingertips confirmed his suspicion. “Daisy O’Donnell!” he exclaimed, his voice sounding a mixture of amusement and disbelief. His voice was louder for being a little drunk, but I’d always found him a playful drunk.

“What?” Bernie asked, tuning into our conversation.

“Nothing,” I barked, feeling mortified and foolish for leaving myself without underwear.

“Nothing is right,” Jamie teased, referring to my lack of panties. He squeezed his hand between my clamped thighs and found my bare wet pussy. Lust filled his eyes and he stared straight at me but addressed the others. “Trust me, it’s nothing,” he told them again, his eyes boring into mine, sparkling with humor. I grabbed his wrist to keep him still, and he chuckled, which turned into a hearty laugh, drawing the attention of everyone else.

“Want to share what the fuck is so funny?” Paddy probed, giving Jamie his full attention. My eyes flicked to the others, and they were all staring at us.

“Nothing,” he forced out again, removing his hand from up my skirt, his breathless laugh silent and uncontrollable. He glanced up at what must have been a look of horror on my face and snorted.

A cell phone ringing distracted everyone; it was Paddy’s. He took it out of his pocket, glanced toward the screen, answered quickly, and held it to his ear.

Jamie wiped tears of laughter from his eyes and composed himself while I tried to think of a fitting punishment for being the butt of his joke.

“Gotcha,” he said to someone before he hung up and put his cell back into his jacket pocket. “Looks like it’s going to be about an hour before we can get back to the hotel. Meanwhile, they’re taking us to a restaurant that’s closing for something to eat.” I looked out of the window and realized we had turned around and we were traveling back in the opposite direction

“Fuck, I can’t believe how many hoops we’ve jumped through in the past two days. All I want is some alone time with my girl. Is that too much to ask?”

“My guess it’s because she’s here, that none of us can go back to the hotel and relax in our suites. Perhaps it would have been better to go public with Daisy after the gig. Donna just said the hotel is crawling with hordes of fans, both inside and outside of the hotel.”

The look Jamie gave me was a mixture of anguish and concern.

“Don’t worry about me, I’ll deal with whatever is coming. At least they can’t dig up dirt from my past.”

“That won’t stop them from making shit up,” he complained, concern for my welfare etched on his face.

It was my chance to show him how strong I could be. I took his face in my hands and he centered his gaze on me.

“When they print lies, we’ll deal with it. I won’t allow myself to get my gut in a bind about something I can’t prevent… that isn’t even out there yet. I know you want to protect me, and I’m acutely aware you have years of experience of dealing with everything that goes with your job, but you’ve told me this isn’t the same… we’re different. Let them do what they want. All I’m concerned about is the physical nature of any threats there may be toward you for being with me, or toward me for being your girlfriend.”

“Told you she had balls,” Paddy confirmed to Jamie. “She’ll be fine. Plus, she’s got Bernie here to keep her straight.”

“And me,” Kim, Finger’s wife chimed in.

I gave her a grateful smile. “Thank you.”

We pulled down a side street off the main drag and stopped outside a small restaurant. Leaving the minibus, we filed into the deserted restaurant. The servers obviously knew who their celebrity guests were and after a couple of minutes, greeting each band member present, they quickly rearranged the tables, sat us all down and began taking orders.

For almost two hours the guys ate and drank, and I quickly understood how close they were as friends when they spoke about experiences they’d shared away from music.

“Let’s get you back to bed,” Jamie informed me when he caught me stifle a yawn.

“Sorry, it’s been a long day,” I replied, leaning my head on his shoulder while he gently rubbed my back. Turning his mouth to my head, he pressed a kiss on top of it and signaled Felix.

Five minutes later we were in a town car with his bodyguard headed back to the hotel, leaving Paddy, Fingers and their wives still partying behind.

When we arrived back at the hotel, there were still around a dozen die-hard female fans mulling around outside. Jamie cursed under his breath, grabbed my hand and waited for Felix to get out.

“Stay close,” Jamie mumbled quietly as we got out of the car.

“Well, unless I have the arms of an orangutan, I don’t think I’ll have much of a choice.” I held up my hand firmly entwined with his, and he chuckled.

“You know what I mean,” he drawled, snickering. “Evening, ladies,” I heard him say as I climbed out of the car behind him. I never heard what he said next as they drowned his voice out by hysterical screaming. Jamie’s hand became ripped away from mine until Felix moved between the small mob and Jamie turned to find me again.
