With one last pat on my ass, he got out of bed, tugging on his clothes. “I’m going to head home to take Scout out and shower.”

“That’s for the best.” If he stayed here, I’d get distracted.

“I’ll see you soon. Good luck this morning.”

“You too,” I murmured against his lips just before he kissed me.

When he was gone, I jumped out of bed, showered, then made a quick breakfast before heading to the park, where setup was supposed to start soon. A truck with Harbor Garage & Service Repair Center stenciled on the side pulled up next to my car in the parking lot.

Stepping out, I went over to greet them. “You must be Ryan and Corey.” At Ryan’s nod, I continued, “Thanks for arriving early. It’s going to be a busy day. We included the coupons for your garage in the welcome bags the guests will receive.”

“I appreciate that,” Ryan said.

Corey stood next to his father, looking uncertain, as if someone would tell him to go home at any second.

“Come on. We need your help.” I gestured toward the large tent that was being erected near the entrance area where we’d collect money and hand out tickets.

Ryan said, “I’ll be back once it starts to check it out. Behave.”

Corey just shook his head, moving to join me.

“I’ll take good care of him,” I said to Ryan with a small wave.

When it was just us, I asked, “Are you excited to meet some football players today?”

Corey let out a breath. “Yeah.”

I was a little surprised he spoke to me after being so quiet with his father. “Well, here’s your chance.”

We paused at the tent where the event coordinator, Naomi, was directing traffic, telling people where to go next, and what to do. I hadn’t expected her to take such a large role, but I was grateful.

“Morning, Naomi. Can you spare Reid for a minute?”

“He’s getting the football field set up.” She gestured to an area where several men were gathered.

“Perfect. Thank you.” Then to Corey, I said, “Come on. This will be the best time to meet the players.”

I approached Dylan. “Thank you so much for coming last minute.”

“Thanks for including us.” Dylan smiled, then turned to introduce her husband. “This is my husband, Reid Everson. Reid, this is Remi, who owns the juice shop on Main.”

I shook his hand. “It’s so nice to meet you. This is Corey. He’s here to help set up.”

Corey’s eyes widened, but he didn’t speak.

“You like football, Corey?” Reid asked him.

Corey swallowed hard, then nodded.

“We could use some help with the kids starting to arrive. You think you could greet them, and show them where to go?”

“I can do that,” Corey said quietly.

“You don’t mind if we steal him, do you?” Dylan asked me.

I smiled gratefully. “Of course not.”

Working with the foster kids would be good for him.
