She shook her head from side to side, then cried out, shattering a second time for me.

Dropping to my elbows on either side of her head, I slowed my movement, not ready to give in to the rising need inside. Unable to hold back any longer, I finally gave in to the explosion of sensations and feelings I only got with her.

Everything was more intense without the condom. The walls of her pussy pulsed around my cock; her trust wrapped around me like a cocoon.

I thrust deep one more time, groaning when I spilled into her. When I came to, I kissed her shoulder and neck. An overwhelming need came over me to tell her how I felt.

I was falling for her. But it was too soon. We hadn’t talked about everything. She didn’t know anything about my past. It wasn’t fair to her. So I kept it to myself. I kissed her on the lips once before rolling off to clean up. Returning with a warm washcloth, she was still splayed on top of the comforter where we’d initially landed.

Tenderness rolling through me in waves, I wiped her off, tossing the washcloth on the floor to clean up later. Settling on the bed, I wrapped an arm around her, pulling her close.

She nestled into the curve of my body. “That was—”

“Intense.”

She relaxed into me more with each second that passed. The only sound in my quiet house was our breathing. Scout must have found a place to sleep.

Swallowing my discomfort, I asked, “Was it more intense because of the meditation?”

The shared experience had deepened our connection, drawing us closer.

Remi turned in my arms, her hand going to my face. “I think it’s you.”

I kissed her, unable to stay away, to pull back and protect myself.

Remi had asked Michael for protection, and I wondered if that meant from me. Would he protect her if I hurt her? When I told her everything, would she call on him again for protection against me?

I tightened my arms around her, not wanting to let her go. I liked having her here, in my home.

Pulling back, she said, “Thank you for being open to that experience.”

“The meditation?”

Her gaze searched my face. “Yeah. I wasn’t sure if you would.”

“I liked it. Just don’t tell the guys or anyone at work.”

She laughed. “Don’t worry. I won’t.”

She nestled into my chest and was quiet for so long that I thought she’d fallen asleep. Then her voice broke the stillness. “I asked for protection for me and you.”

I tensed. “Because of my job and what happened today?”

“What happened today at my store threw me more than I thought. It was hard to achieve that feeling of well-being I usually have.” She shivered in my arms.

“It’s a violation. You thought you were safe. That no one would do anything during the day while you were there.”

“I wasn’t there when it happened, but I think you’re right. I didn’t feel safe, and the store’s always been my happy place.”

With the white and bright colors, I could see that. “It’ll be that again. We’ll figure out who did it.”

I didn’t like that Remi, who was always so carefree and happy, was stressed. As much as I wanted her to be aware of her surroundings, I wanted her to feel safe. I couldn’t be with her all the time, so she needed to feel that way on her own.

She cupped my cheek. “I feel safe with you.”

She shouldn’t, but I didn’t have the heart to tell her that. I wasn’t as diligent or focused as I should be. I made mistakes like anyone else. I wasn’t her protector, and I definitely wasn’t anyone’s hero.

This was my opportunity to tell her the truth. She shouldn’t count on me. I let everyone down.
