“Even though, she would be an accomplice, right?”

“Something like that. Either way, it’s going to look bad if she has any connection. I don’t want Mason to be taken away from her, but her jealousy and whatever else is fueling her is going to do some damage.”

“Do you think that maybe until all this goes away, you and Shaw should take a step back?”

“No, absolutely not. I don’t think that would be helpful. That is exactly what Marie wants. And not by any means something that would be fair to either Shaw or me. She will not win.”

“Fair enough. I don’t want you guys to do that either. I was just testing you.” She grins.

We drink a lot more, and it’s not long before my shoulder is being shaken. There are empty bottles on the coffee table and a half-eaten pizza. Sloane is snoring loudly in the recliner, still with a drink in her hand.

“What time is it?” I ask.

“It’s just after midnight. Come to bed,” he beckons. “I’ll get Sloane into the spare room.”

Spare room. That’s the room that I moved into. I try to not think too deep into his words. I push myself up from the couch and feel like I’m sleepwalking down the hall. I turn into his room, remove my pants and crawl into his bed.

His bed. Our bed. Spare room. My room.
