“We don’t know that it won’t work out. We would need to trust in taking the risk and seeing what could happen. I’m not telling you that I have the answers to it all, not by any means. But I’ve always told myself that if the opportunity presented itself, that I would take the leap,” I admit. “I’m afraid that if something happens between us that sleeping together or whatever would make things different. I’m scared to lose you, and that’s a possibility if a relationship together doesn’t work out. I can’t tell you what will happen in the future, but I can tell you this—I will undeniably do what I can to be your perfect match, or we can just go along back to our friendship as if nothing ever happened.” I shrug.

“You said last night that you’ve wanted to kiss me from the start, why didn’t you?” she tilts her head in question.

“I wasn’t clear if you were interested, then we fell into the friends zone pretty quick and I was resigned to the fact that at least I had you in my life and that was better than not.”

“I see,” she nods, her thumb outlining the rim of her cup.

“You said you’ve thought about me as more than a friend from time to time?” I ask, hoping she will elaborate.

“Gosh, this is so embarrassing,” her head falls into her hands.

“What is?” I ask, mixing the waffle ingredients into the mixing bowl.

“Talking about this, with you, it’s very adult of us.”

“Well we’re adulting well then,” I look up and smile at her. “So?”

“When we first met, I had a slight crush. But like you said, we became friends and then yeah. But recently, ugh, do I really have to tell you this?” she covers her eyes and peeks out through the cracks.

“No, but now I really want to know,” I say.

She inhales deeply and then looks up, demanding my attention.

“I went out with Sloane, and she brought you up, and it was like a veil was lifted and suddenly I was seeing you in a different light, the same light that I did when we first met, but the older version of you. I noticed little things that I don’t think that I did before, and yeah.”

I have finished mixing everything and I’m blown away from her confession.

“Confession time?” I ask and proceed when she nods, “I’ve never not noticed those little things, I’ve pined after you for years,” I take a deep breath before saying this last bit, knowing that it’s a game changer. “And I really, really, really want to give in to whatever this is that’s brewing,”

“It’s coffee,” she says like the smart ass that she is.

“You know what I mean,” I move around the counter and stand beside her, commanding her to turn and face me. “I want to see what amazing things can come out of a relationship, a romantic one, with you.”

“That would be really confusing to Mason,” she says for an excuse.

“That’s not a reason for anything, Mason loves you and you’re family, anyway. Good try though.”

“What if it ruins our relationship?”

“Sometimes the best things come from taking a risk.”
