My heart breaks in that moment, “me too kiddo, me too.” I tell her.

I pull into the driveway of Amelia’s new home, and kill the engine, then turn to face my sweet little girl in the backseat.

“I love you baby girl, you know that right?”

“Of course, and I love you too.”

“Did you have a great birthday?” I ask her.

“I had two of them, that’s better than great daddy!” she exclaims.

“I’m glad sweetie. Come on, let’s get you inside, it’s way past your bedtime.” I tell her opening the door.

I walk her up the pathway to the front door to have it open before I knock.

Amelia stands in front of me, cold as ice with her arms crossed.

“It’s late,” she glares.

“Late is only relative.” I reply, wanting to say a whole lot more, but holding back to shield our daughter.

She bends down and smiles at Kady, “hey bug, did you have a good day?”

“Yeah, I had two birthdays!” She smiles.

Amelia stands and places the coldness back on her position as Kady turns to me and hugs me.

“Thank you, daddy. I’ll remember to eat the trees now because they’re good and not taking away the air.” She wraps her tiny arms around my side, and I lean down to hug her.

“I’ll be right in, go and get ready for bed.” Amelia says. “I need to talk to daddy for a moment. Can you go and brush your teeth?”

Kady runs past her and deep into the house as my ex turns to me and crosses her arms.

“Don’t be late next time.”

“Let me see my daughter more, and I wouldn’t have to.” I sneer.

She reaches to the side and hands me a large envelope then holds it out to me.

“What’s this?” I ask, turning the envelope over in my hands.

“I’m making all this official, don’t fight me on any of this. The courts will always choose the mother.”

My blood is boiling, but the only thing stopping me from reacting right now is the fact that my beautiful little girl is skipping around in the background in her pajamas waving her toothbrush in the air, as we stand here at the door having a stare-off.

Amelia smirks. “What, did you think that I wouldn’t take you to court?”

“You honestly do not want to know what I think at this moment,” my jaw clenches as I hiss out the words.

“Goodnight Quinlan. Thank you for bringing my daughter home.”

The door shuts in my face.
