Chapter Nine

Tonight couldn’t have come faster. The amount of nerves that have been running through my veins has been more than I could imagine. I don’t recall in the past ever being a mixture of panic or confidence in any situations with relationships.

Is it because of the status of who he is?

Is it because our relationship is forbidden in the general scope of any workplace?

No. It’s because there’s been quite the anticipation of taking our relationship a step further.

And then there is the excitement. The excitement of what’s to come.

I stand just outside of the office building with my overnight bag and a cup of tea. Everyone from the office has left the building except for Quinn, who went with our original plan and stayed later.

I keep my attention on my phone while I wait to begin our rendezvous. He doesn’t make me wait long, he walks out the double doors and looks from side to side until he sees me.

Our eyes meet and he begins to walk towards me with a smile.

He reaches for my hip when he stands in front of me, leans down, and kisses just below my ear.

“I feel like today was the longest day ever,” he whispers.

“Seriously.” I breathe out.

“Come on, let’s go.” He wraps his arm around me, and we turn towards the train station.

Standing on the platform together, we’re lost in our own world while we wait. Quinn steps to the side and grabs something from the nearby vending machine when I hear someone call my name.

I turn and see one of my teammates, Nicole walking up to me.

“What on earth are you doing? I thought you left work a while ago?” she asks coming to stand beside me.

I quickly look over to Quinn and he turns around and looks to the other side, to stay out of sight.

“I had some errands to run after work,” I tell her holding up my tea.

“Oh cool, I did too.” She looks over at me and smiles. “Looks like we’re going to be on the same train home too, maybe we can sit together?”

“Um, yeah sure. That would be good.”

She smiles as if she’s just was granted surreptitious access into a fancy restaurant.

The rumble of the train fills the space as it nears. I look around and see Quinn widen his eyes and angle his head towards Nicole. I shrug and he laughs quietly. The train stops in front of us and Quinn walks ahead of us.

“Oh, is that Mr. Montgomery?” Nicole leans in and whispers.

I look around, even though I know exactly where he is and act like I don’t see him. Nicole gets a little too close in my personal space as we begin to walk and points at him.

“How could you miss him? Gawd, he is so handsome.” She gushes.

“You think so?” I ask, acting surprised.

“You don’t? I mean have you seen him? That first day when he was up on that stage, wearing that suit—oh man, I had that in my mind for the rest of that week. That man can sure as hell wear a suit, or rather let a suit wear him like, well like a boss!” she laughs a little too loud.

“Well, yeah he is attractive, I guess.” I shrug, trying to play that I’m neutral to him.

We take a seat on the train and make small talk for three stops before it’s her stop and she gets off.

After the train doors close and the movement begins, Quinn slides into the vacated seat beside me with a grin.
