I know kisa means pussycat and ptichka means little bird. I hated them at first, but I grew to love them. I have no idea what this new one means, but right now I don’t have the strength to ask.

Eventually, I fall back to sleep and wake a few hours later to my phone ringing.

It’s hidden amongst the sheets, so it takes me a moment to find it.

Zara’s name flashes across the screen. She’s been checking in every day since I got my new phone, and it’s been so comforting to hear her voice. To have a piece of my old life with me.

I wish I could say the same for my father, who has yet to return any of my calls.

I’m starting to get worried, though I know if I bring it up with Alexei, he’ll only say that everything is fine. Perhaps I need to start taking things into my own hands…

I quickly slide my thumb across the screen to answer the call.

“Hey,” I croak, my throat dry and scratchy.

“You sound like shit, are you okay?”

“Food poisoning.”

“Still? You had that days ago!”

“It won’t budge.” I reach for the glass of water on my bedside table and take a sip.

Zara is quiet for a moment as I drink until she lets out some kind of strangled cry, making me almost spill my water all down me.

“What is it?”

“Uh, nothing.”

“Zara? What’s wrong?”

“I-I have to go. Speak soon!”

Zara hangs up the phone, leaving me frowning at the screen.

What the hell was that about?

An hour later, the door to my room swings open to reveal a very flustered Zara in the doorway.

“Oh, my god, Zara!” I sit up in bed.

She’s out of breath, strands of her blonde hair sticking to her face as she darts inside the room and shuts the door behind her.

“What the hell are you doing here? How did you get in the house?”

“I climbed the fence at the back of the house.” She gasps for breath.

“You what?”

She crosses the room and climbs onto the bed beside me dumping a CVS bag down between us.

“And then the big scary dude downstairs let me in.”

“Micah let you in?”

“Yeah. He seemed to know who I was.” Zara shrugs. “I guess Alexei put my face on a list of approved visitors. I said I was here to keep you company while you're sick.”

“Oh, my god,” I groan. “Alexei is going to be so mad.”
