“Sounds uppity.”

“He is uppity,” Reese casually agrees on a crooked grin. “However, that’s only like twelve percent his own fault. His name bears a lot of weight in both clout and dollar amounts. I’m surprised Lauren never mentioned that.”

“Mom has always just said her boss was a wealthy guy. She didn’t exactly give many details, and I didn’t exactly ask.”

“Wes is the majority shareholder of Wilcox Enterprises.”

“Like the whiskey?”

“His family legacy started in whiskey but left only alcohol a long time ago. His multifaceted billion-dollar business is one of the best and largest in the entire world that also manages to steadily match or increase profits yearly.”

Disbelief instantly drops my jaw along with my grip. “My mom scrubs toilets for a fucking billionaire?!”

“She doesn’t scrub toilets.”

“Is that like…she doesn’t scrub toilets because she’s banging him, or she doesn’t scrub toilets because he possesses technology that has them scrub themselves?”

“She’s definitely not sleeping with Wes. That would be weird-”

“Because older women can’t hook up with younger men? Don’t be ageist.”

“Because she’s basically been mothering him for the last ten years, and while Wes certainly has issues, that whole wanting to bang a woman like his mom thing isn’t one of them.”

A perplexed hum mindlessly precedes me stating, “I remember when she left working at The Frost Luxury Hotel that’s downtown, she said she was going to be doing something similar for four times the pay for some rich guy who had a Beauty & The Beast complex.”

“I feel like you’re paraphrasing.”

“I am.”

He nods prior to holding a finger to the dark umber skinned male preparing to open his door.

“She initially took the gig – which required her to completely relocate – to help me pay for school – my dad had a fun habit of gambling away my college fund – but I assumed she stayed because the money was that good and who the fuck wants to pay for rent when you don’t have to?”

“Lauren’s title is Head of the Household. She’s in charge of the entire staff at the Wilcox Estate – security aside. That’s its own thing.”

“Naturally.”

“She handles scheduling, vacations, hiring, firing, and managing those in charge of specific departments like laundry or kitchen or landscaping. When he originally acquired her services, he was looking for someone to help restructure those employed by him, as well as someone who could ensure everything would function smoothly for the coming years.”

“So, she’s like a corporate maid.”

“That seems…wrong? Poorly phrased?”

“I’m sorry my speech patters are once more not to your liking, Mr. Reese.”

“J.T.”

A quirked eyebrow is immediately given in response.

“You can call me J.T.”

“And you can tell me what’s so wrong with my mom that you, the bossman’s righthand man, had to come all the way to the land of the poor to tell me about it face to face.”

“When’s the last time you spoke to Lauren?”

“Couple weeks ago. She’d been fighting a cold or shitty allergies on and off for a few days.”

“I’m afraid it’s a little more severe than that.”
