It’s impossible not to briefly cringe as a wordless rebuttal.

“That wasn’t a question.” Wes folds his arms firmly across his chest at the same time he adds, “It was a statement.”

“Sounded like an order Captain Prickard.” My stance swiftly matches his. “And since I’m already having to follow a different set of orders this weekend, I will be unable to follow yours.”

“Excuse me?”

“Raquel is sending us down to The K&T Aquatic Institute this weekend to evaluate a potential mate for Steven.”

Which is more likely the reason my stomach is still upset versus those awful waffles that tasted decent going down but disgusting coming up.

“They wanna get your boy laid?” Puppet Boy juvenilely grins. “You going down to be his wing woman?”

“Who better than me to pick up chicks with?”

“You escorting him or escorting him?” he pokes with a small laugh.

“I-”

“Cannot. Go.” The man who I’m supposed to marry this winter viciously bites.

There’s no hesitation to chomp back. “Pardon?”

“You. Cannot. Go.”

“Funny, I don’t remember asking for your permission to pass go and collect my two hundred dollars, Mr. Monopoly.”

“This isn’t a joke.”

“This also isn’t a discussion.”

“You are needed at my side at this event.” His entire body lengthens to its full height. “You will be there.”

“I am needed to work this weekend. I will be there.”

“This is important.”

“And my fucking job suddenly isn’t?”

“That’s not what I said.”

“That’s exactly what you fucking said.”

“Do. Not. Put words in my mouth,” is growled alongside a step towards me. “I do not appreciate when anyone puts words into them.”

“Fine.” It’s my turn to take a challenging step forward. “It’s what you heavily implied.”

“And what do you think you’re heavily implying by constantly choosing work over me?” He doesn’t pause for a response. “By skipping company dinners or events? By constantly being photographed laughing and frolicking with other men?”

“Did you just say frolicking?” Puppet Boy quietly gags.

“By not wearing your fucking engagement ring?”

The hiss out of the bystander in the room almost gathers my glare.

“Your job is inarguably important.” Wes kicks his chin up a smidge higher. “Why am I not?”

“Now who’s putting words into whose mouth?”
