"He doesn't want to say."

"You know, if it's related to Gold Nugget Pharmaceuticals, we cannot take the case. That would be a huge conflict of interest."

"I know," I say. "That's why I wanted to ask you if you've heard of anything related to this with any of their products."

He says, "I don't know. Hold on. I know Remington's been working on some of their stuff for me. Let's get him on the line."

"Okay."

I look over at Skye and I can tell she's trying not to listen to the conversation.

"Hey, Remi, I've got Kingston on the line with us."

"Hey, what's up? I'm about to head into court. Can this wait?"

"No," I say quickly. "We've got a potential client here with a lawsuit against a major pharmaceutical company. We do not know which pharmaceutical company it is. Apparently, they're making some sort of cream that's meant to relieve cramps but it is actually giving people second-degree burns."

"Fuck, it's not with Gold Nugget, is it? Shit, I told them that."

I sigh. "So they have a cream that is burning people?"

"They took it off the market," he says. "But they did not have it withdrawn from retail stores that it was already in, even though I told them to. However, they did not want to take on any..." He pauses. "Look, I’ve got to go."

He hangs up. Max swears under his breath.

"You're going to have to send that guy away."

"I know," I say. "But you do know we have a problem here because another firm is going to take this case."

Max lets out a deep sigh. "I know. I'll speak to Remington and we'll have to speak to John Schneider, the CEO, and figure out the next steps."

"Okay. Tell him that there is a local emergency walk-in clinic that has a lot of clients, so he'd better come up with a settlement number."

I hang up and look over at Skye. There's a frown on her face.

"What's going on?" she says.

"You're going to have to let Mr. Estes know that we're unable to take his case and that he should find himself another law firm."

"But he has proof. He showed me photos. He?—"

"We cannot take this case, Skye," I say bluntly.

"So what? You don't want to help these victims get money because we may or may not represent the pharmaceutical company that made this product."

"Obviously, we cannot sue ourselves."

Her jaw drops.

"What? But you don't even know the company! Are you...?"

She shakes her head.

"Every time I think you guys cannot be any lower, you are."

"I don't really know what I'm meant to make of that."

"What'd you think you're meant to make of that?" she says. "It means you're representing scumbags. We represent a large pharmaceutical company that makes thousands of different products that help people, but they're also making products that don't help people, that are hurting people."
