“Harmony, wait!”

Before I know what’s happening, Summer bolts after Harmony, who just ran away looking as white as a sheet.

Harmony’s cracked, dejected voice echoes down the adjoining hallway, and I hear another door slam shut. “Leave me alone!”

Cooper and I are left to deal with whatever the hell he just did with Summer.

As for me, my blood pressure has skyrocketed, and I see red.

“Cooper. What the fuck,” I growl.

Cooper holds up his hands in surrender. “Dude, I didn’t kiss her.”

“Sure looks like you did,” I say, stepping forward, readying for a brawl that I know I’ll lose.

“She kissed me!”

“Fuck you,” I hiss, taking a swing. My more athletic brother ducks out of the way of my fist, then performs some high school wrestling move that ends with me in a headlock.

“Let me go,” I grunt, flailing as he drags me out the side door and onto the patio.

“No,” he says.

“First, you kiss the girl I like, and then you put me in a headlock. What a good brother,” I say.

“Because you took a swing at me!”

“Let me go!”

“Only if you promise to not try to hit me, and sit your ass down and listen.”

He lets me go and I fly at him again.

“Goddamn it, Carter!” He shoves me away. “It was an accident!”

“What are you talking about?”

“Will you calm down and listen to me? Summer came out of the bathroom. It was dark. She thought I was you.”

“How do you know that?”

“Because she started apologizing for taking you wrong, and that she could tell I was shy. Does that sound like me?”

“It sounds like you to be a big flirt with Summer!”

“Are you even listening, drunk? We’ve all had a little too much to drink. It was dark and she thought I was you. Remember the part where we’re twins? Those girls barely know us. Of course Summer’s gonna get us mixed up.”

I take a moment to absorb what he’s saying.

He waits for a beat.

“Does that make sense now?”

“Yeah.”

“Good.”
