***Fisher***

Campus was always fun the week after a win. Being the star of the show didn’t hurt, either. I couldn’t go more than twenty feet without someone stopping me to talk about the game. I welcomed the chats and had made more than my fair share of friends through those meetings. As I tossed a football in the air that Monday morning, though, I didn’t want to be stopped. I had something else in mind. Someone else, really.

I searched the students leaving the English building and spotted Ella and her high ponytail right away. She had a natural bounce to her walk that made that ponytail sway from side to side and did things to her body that made my mouth water. She was talking to a guy I recognized from the games and the way she was smiling up at him made me feel a little like Vaughn. Especially the punchy part.

Moving towards them, I nodded at someone who tossed out a ‘good game’. Feeling a lot like a heat seeking missile, I closed in on Ella. She glanced away from the guy and did a double take when she saw me. Her smile grew even brighter somehow and I watched in awe as her cheeks turned pink.

“Fisher! What are you doing here?” She rolled her eyes and kept talking. “I mean, you go to school here, so it makes sense that you would be here. Duh. I’m just surprised to see you. Nice football.”

The guy she’d been talking with nodded at me and laughed. “That’s my cue. See you, Ella. Tell Nat I said she’s a chicken.”

Ella groaned after he walked away and looked up at me through her lashes. “You know how sometimes you forget how to people? That just happened to me. Let’s not talk about it.”

I held my ball out to her. “But what about my nice football?”

She laughed and pushed it away. “Why are you here, making me embarrass myself?”

“I was in the neighborhood?” I fell into step with her as we walked towards the quad. “Did you have a good class? Who’s the guy?”

She stopped walking and stared up at me with her hands on her hips. “I had a good class, yes. The guy is Chris, someone who is interested in my friend, Natalie. Were you waiting on me?”

I shrugged. “Maybe. Maybe not.”

“Why were you waiting on me?” She didn’t budge as people walked around us.

I couldn’t pull my attention from her as people threw out congrats. They were just white noise. “Can’t a guy just want to walk a girl around campus?”

Her big green eyes widened. “Like a dog?”

I choked as I tried to rush to correct her but then I realized she was laughing. Frowning at her, I shook my head. “Now I’m seeing the connection to Vaughn.”

She gasped and slapped my football out of my hands. “Take it back.”

I moved closer to her. “What are you going to do if I don’t?”

“Murder seems like a fair punishment.” She smirked up at me then and I felt a chill go down my back at how sneaky she looked. “Also, I happen to know that you are one of the only people left in the world that still gets their porn magazines mailed to them.”

I gaped down at her and floundered for a second before I took her elbow and pulled her off the sidewalk. I could feel my face burning and tried to find some semblance of cool. “What the hell, Ella?”

Her eyes danced with laughter. “I cleaned your bathroom, Fisher. I honestly thought you were leaving them out as a conversation piece or something.”

“A conversation piece? Jesus.”

“It’s not a big deal. I’m not really going to tell anyone. Even if I wanted to, no one would believe that those magazines still exist. Do you not know about internet porn, Fisher?” She was having fun, I could tell.

I stepped closer to her, determined to save some face. “What do you know about internet porn, Ella?”

Both of our faces were red and we’d landed ourselves in uncharted territory but I wasn’t ready to back down. I hoped she wasn’t, either. Spending time with her alone was my favorite thing to do those days.

She inched closer. “I know that your magazine interests are very dirty. Such a wide variety of interests you have.”

“Did you sit and take your time going through them? That’s questionable, Ella. And not at all appropriate behavior for Vaughn’s little sis.”

“You did not go there.” She went up on her tiptoes to really glare at me. “I’m pretty sure, by law, I could bite you for calling me his little sister.”

I grinned. “By law, huh?”
