“I want you in my bed, Katja,” I told her, ignoring her admission. “I am not interested in hotel sheets smelling like you in the morning.”

Her eyes immediately started to water. “I don’t want to be here, Maksim,” she repeated. “Please don’t do this to me.”

“It’s too late, lyublyu,” I informed her, breaking the news to her. “You’ve already seen where I live.”

A lone tear escaped, but she quickly brushed it away. She also didn’t say anything more as Jurik pulled into my parking spot, but what would be the point? Katja was a smart girl, and she could see the writing on the wall just as everyone else. I was calling the shots here, despite how Nikel believed that he was the one in charge.

Once the car was in park, I got out, then rounded the back of the vehicle to open Katja’s door. However, I had barely cleared the back end before I heard her car door open, and by the time that I reached her, she was already shutting the door.

That pissed me off.

“Do not ever do that again,” I ordered.

Katja blinked at me. “Do what?”

“Open your own door,” I clarified. “You wait until it is opened for you.”

“Why?” She genuinely looked baffled.

“Because that is what’s proper,” I answered simply.

Her brows shot upward, but she didn’t say anything more. She didn’t agree or disagree, but just walked with me towards the elevators, and I knew that it was going to be a long night.

Chapter 22

Katja~

I had no idea what was going on with Maksim, but the man was giving me whiplash. Who in the hell treated their whore properly? What kind of nonsense was that?

Nevertheless, my stomach felt like it was tied in knots as I watched Maksim unlock his front door, and I’d never wanted to not be somewhere so badly in all my life. I hadn’t been lying when I’d said that I didn’t want to know where Maksim lived. I didn’t want to know anything about him because then it’d feel too much like I was doing as Klive had demanded of me, and I wasn’t.

As soon as Maksim unlocked the door, he placed his hand on the small of my back, then ushered me inside. Once the door was shut behind us, I turned to face the bratva leader, and he was looking at me in a way that just made me more confused. Considering how we’d met and what we were doing, I shouldn’t be here, and I couldn’t understand why he couldn’t see that.

“I really don’t want to be here,” I told him again. “Why can’t we go to a hotel?”

“I already told you,” he replied evenly. “I’m not concerned with random hotel sheets smelling like you.”

“That makes no sense,” I sighed, beginning to feel frustrated. “Just like opening my door. Since when does a man have to treat a whore with manners? That’s absurd.”

Maksim stepped towards me and didn’t stop until he was standing directly in front of me. “Do not ever call yourself that again.”

Now I was really freakin’ confused.

“What?”

“You heard me,” he said, his voice carrying a bit of an edge. “You will not refer to yourself as that again.”

“Why not?” I asked stubbornly. “It’s what we agreed to, Maksim. It’s the very reason that I’m even here.”

He grabbed my chin in his fingers, forcing my head up. “Is it?” he asked challengingly. “Are you telling me that you’re not attracted to me, Katja? Are you telling me that you feel nothing for me whenever I have my hands on you? Are you really just here to play your part as my whore?”

Maksim was pissing me off.

He wasn’t playing fair.

This wasn’t part of the deal.

“That’s not fair, and you know it,” I practically spat. “Quit trying to manipulate me when it’s not necessary, Maksim. I’m here. I’m doing what you ordered me to do. I’m doing my best to help you find Klive while not getting my grandfather and myself killed. What fucking more do you want from me?”
