“I’m fine.”

Black and white spots dance across my vision as the rest of my skin tingles, prickling like it’s being scratched at by all those passing branches again.

“Ava…”

Arms surround me as I drag in a splintered breath.

Empty eyes that haunt my dreams invade my consciousness.

“Stop,” I murmur, pushing at the solid warmth in front of me.

A masculine scent envelops me as I’m lifted from my feet.

Then everything goes black.

Chapter 28

Jet

I lift my glass, letting the whiskey burn a trail down my throat as I stare out of my office window.

My heart has never felt like it’s about to drop out of my ass before. Not until I saw Ava’s eyes roll back in her head as all the blood drained from her face. She came around after a cold towel on her forehead and her feet raised.

But my heart hasn’t stopped feeling like I’m about to go into cardiac arrest since.

“Jesus,” I utter as I pinch the bridge of my nose.

“That’s the first time the media team has dealt with something like that.” Hayden laughs as he walks into my office.

I turn away from the floor to ceiling windows and look at him. “Breathe a word and you’re fired.”

He stuffs his hands into his pants pockets as he strolls closer, his eyes dancing with mirth.

“Come on, you mean you don’t want everyone knowing what a charitable member of the Beverly Hills community you are?”

I grumble.

“Fine,” he concedes. “But next time you’re going to get the cops called on you for having your dick out in public, can you do it in my neighborhood? A donation that size will get us the new library we want.”

He sniggers, eyes lit up like the fourth of July. He’s going to be cashing in on the fact I had to call him to help diffuse the situation at my house after Ava ran off for months, if not years.

Still, I’d have donated ten times what I did to the neighborhood community fund to have avoided a trip to jail. The fact it took me hours to make it to Ava’s doorstep riles me.

What if she’d passed out with no one there to help her?

He studies my grave expression. “Everything okay?”

“Fine,” I mutter.

He’s known me long enough to know when to let something drop.

“So, how’s the hiring going?” he asks instead.

“It’s done. He starts tomorrow.”

“He?” Hayden tips his head in interest. “You got a male PA? Is he hot?”

“Don’t get ideas,” I grit. “Patrick comes highly recommended; I don’t want to have to replace him next week. Fuck your own PA if you must.”
