“I’ve never worked with your mom, but I look forward to meeting her one day,” Jay says.

“She’s amazing,” Ava gushes. “It was always her dream to be an actress. She’s played some brilliant roles over the past ten years since moving to LA.”

“Did you go to school here, then?” Matt asks.

Ava tenses. “I—”

I pull my phone from my pocket and glance at the screen. “I’m so sorry guys. Ava, we need to go.”

She turns to me, her eyes widening. “Oh… okay.”

I stand and pull her chair out. “It was great to see you all.”

Chapter 26

Jet

“What’s happened? Is itCallaghan?”

“Nothing’s happened.” I relax back into the seat of the taxi.

Ava frowns. “But you got a message.”

“No.”

“On your phone,” she presses. “At the table.”

“I have a headache, that’s all.”

“What? You rushed us out of there like there was an emergency.”

She studies me, giving up and looking out the window when I don’t engage further. I glance at her, eating up every passing sight with a smile. Traveling looks good on her, exploring new places, seeing new things.

It’s like she was born to explore.

“Beverly Hills?” She whips her head to me after we’ve been driving for thirty minutes.

“It’s where I live.”

Her mouth drops open as we pull up at a pair of security gates between two high hedgerows.

“Press this to the sensor.” I hand a key fob to the driver and he uses it to open the gates.

Ava goes silent as we cruise up the long driveway to the house.

I pay the driver and climb out, coming around to open Ava’s door for her. She looks at me in confusion.

“Isn’t the driver dropping me at Mum’s?”

“No.”

“But you have a headache. Don’t you need to lie down in a dark room or something?”

“I’ve had a miraculous recovery. Now, get out of the car.”

She climbs out and stares up at the glass-fronted house.

“You live here alone? Oh my god, I’d get lost. Aren’t you worried you’ll die and no one will find you for months?”
