“You know, your parents are here today,” he said, and I nodded.

“Yeah, I got them diamond field passes,” I said as I concentrated on the game. It started off so well, but it was starting to feel like everything was going down the drain. Coach Anderson seemed pissed, and so did the other players. They all looked so stressed, and yet I was smiling.

I think I just had crazy faith that things could turn around, or at least I hoped so. Regardless, we were all playing a passionate game, and what better way to play the final game right before the World Series?

“Oh?” Daniel snickered as he leaned forward to watch me. “So you and Daddy are all good now?”

“Don’t call him that,” I grimaced. Arthur and I were getting there, but I wouldn’t say we were good. When I went over to their place and asked if they would like to come watch my final game, he was the first one to say yes, and I believed that was his way of reaching out to me. “Aren’t you stressed about the game?” I asked as I pointed to the field.

Daniel scoffed and shook his head as he leaned back in his chair.

“I was worried about you, and now that you played your heart out, I don’t really care about the game's outcome.” If it weren’t for Coach Anderson’s glare directed at Daniel, I would have been absolutely touched that my annoying best friend was happy for me.

“Boy, if you’re here to curse the game…” Coach Anderson gritted his teeth, and Daniel raised his hands apologetically.

“Sorry, sir.” He pretended to zip his mouth and throw away the key. Hopefully forever. Leaning in closer to me, he whispered, “Coach is still hard-boiled isn’t he?”

“He won’t change anytime soon.”

I chuckled as I bit on my nail, watching as the last pitch thrown by Fred Cougar was counterattacked by Jeff’s bat, the best batter on our team.

The ball flew across the field, and Jeff ran all the bases successfully. In the end, though, even though he had another home run under his belt, we ended up one short to win the game against the Phoenix team.

The Phoenix team members ran onto the field celebrating their win while our team hugged and comforted each other.

The fireworks sparkled in the sky as the winning team was announced on the screen. The cheers were still loud and lively, and my cheeks were hurting as I smiled widely. Ironically, I felt happy, even though we’d lost and wouldn’t be playing in the World Series.

When was the last time I felt this fulfilled in life?

Chapter 30

Naomi

I couldn’t believe I was here. Why had I allowed my dad to convince me to come to this celebration party? The bright screen light almost blinded me as I lifted my phone to look at my fathers text.

P. Daddy: You better come to the celebration party.

I sighed as I looked at the text. Maybe I should have turned around, but it wasn’t like I could do it with this overly excited woman who was hooked on my right arm. Evelyn wouldn’t stop jumping up and down. “Come on, let’s go in already.” She gripped my arm tighter, pulling me toward the door.

“I was making sure the address was the correct one,” I lied as I stared at the glass doors with bronze handles. The doorman opened the door for us as we entered. I used to think no matter the condition of the weather, they had to stay outside, but I guess that wasn’t the case.

“Welcome to LondonHouse, ladies.” His deep voice had us doubling back, nodding shyly as we continued on our way and, of course, Evelyn had to look back at him once more.

“Maybe I should stay here,” she whispered as she continued looking at the man. “What a beautiful black man, mmm,” she groaned as she shook her head, and in that moment she reminded me of Mia. I wondered if she was here. “Did you see his broad shoulders?” She squealed as she pinched my arm.

Someone is excited.

“How could you see his broad shoulders under that uniform?” I asked as the elevator doors closed. Why did they choose to have a rooftop party?

“Don’t you know that a man in uniform has so much to hide?” she whispered, winking as she patted the front of her dress, and I giggled, not surprised by her behavior. I looked back at my reflection on the elevator doors; I turned to inspect my dress and sighed. “Oooh, you are looking so hot,” she said as she smoothed down my dress and pinched my butt, making me squeal. “Who for?”

“What do you mean?” I asked, flustered; was I being too obvious? I mean, there’s no reason not to dress up.

“Girl, I saw you getting ready.” She laughed as she fluffed out her hair. “You used your expensive perfume, put on a little bit more makeup than you usually do, and you’re wearing your little sexy piece. Your knees are out.” She smiled naughtily, and I looked at my dress.

So yeah, it was a bit sexier than the ones I was used to wearing, and it had a split running from mid-thigh going down. The cocktail dress was midi and held on to every curve I had on my body.
