“Uhm, sometimes when we would have arguments or celebrations; Alexander tends to drink a bit heavily,” Miranda said softly, and Alexander tilted his head to the side.

“Is that true, Mr Harris?”

Alexander clenched his jaw and looked at Miranda silently. Even when she was being overly honest, there wasn’t a bone in him that could hate her.

“Yeah.” He cleared his throat as he leaned back in his seat. “I drink a bit,” he admitted, and Miranda blew out a relieved breath.

“All right, then. You both agreed to share your estate assets, financial assets, and retirement accounts, correct?” Miranda sat up straight and fixed her jacket.

“Yes. We agreed to split everything,” she confirmed, and Alexander groaned as he stood up and put his hands on the table.

“Fuck this, Miranda. Have everything,” he announced as he buttoned his jacket. “I’m a bit tired, and dragging this out is exhausting.”

“What? No. We agreed to share everything.” She stood up, crossing her arms over her chest, widening her eyes.

“I don’t want it! Just like you don’t want me. Have it all.” Alexander motioned with his hands. He sighed heavily, ignoring his aching shoulder. “You deserve it,” he whispered, blinking rapidly. Miranda noted his red-stained eyes, and her lips quivered as she wiped her tears. “I’m sorry I hurt you, and I’m sorry I couldn’t fix it in time.” He sniffled as he roughly wiped his tears. “I love you, Miranda, and I hope you can finally be happy, even without me.”

“Mr Harris, are you sure about this?” his lawyer asked, thinking Alexander was making a mistake.

“Yes, I am! Write it down and let me sign it.” Alexander felt frustrated and just wanted to leave.

“Alexander,” Miranda whispered as she watched him grab the pen. “Don’t do this.” Her eyes followed his hand as he signed his signature. “Please.” She looked up at him with glossy eyes. Staring back into her blue orbs, he softly smiled, pushing his hands into his pockets.

“See ya around, Miranda.” He walked around the table and kissed her forehead. Miranda’s tears fell as Alexander left the conference room. Finalizing their divorce, walking away with nothing but his career, which hung on a thin thread, Alexander left the court building.

Chapter 1

Naomi

Shit, shit, shit! I’m already late on my first day, and the reason for that should solely be on me, but I am not going to take responsibility for it just yet. I was supposed to catch a ride with Daddy, but he said I can’t be too spoiled.

What does that even mean? Too spoiled? If anything, as his only daughter, I am not spoiled enough! I wasn’t planning on getting a ride each and every day since we work together now, but I was expecting to catch a ride on my first day. I am sort of shy, and I guess I wanted to hide behind his back as I greeted everyone.

Maybe I am a bit spoiled, I admit… but everyone gets first-day jitters! It is totally normal, especially for a fresh graduate. I just finished my Masters in Sports Psychology, and I am officially a Certified Mental Consultant. I guess the title did get into my head a bit too much, because I thought it would be a great idea to get field experience before I pursued my Doctorate.

I should’ve just pursued my Doctorate.

I parked my car into the next empty spot and grabbed my bag in a rush. I looked at the “reserved” sign and shook my head; they would just have to forgive me. I was supposed to be in the Chicago Grizzlies training center building 30 minutes ago! Not a great first impression, but it is nothing compared to what I am going to do for this team! I am determined, passionate, and headstrong! I will help the team sort out their issues, and they will continue to win championships—thanks to me, of course!

Am I tooting my horn a bit too much? Yes, and I should! I didn’t spend six years in University just to be self-effacing and not confident in my skills. Everyone is going to love me!

“You’re late, pudding,” my father said as I passed by him, struggling to carry the million items I thought would make me look smart, but instead made me look like a tardy, struggling consultant. However, I was still confident I would make great impressions today.

“I wouldn’t be if you had just waited for me.” I threw my items on the couch and stood up, placing my hands on my aching hips. I should’ve left a few files, I guess.

“As if you would leave the house by 6 a.m.” He chuckled as he closed my new office’s door. “You get here okay?” he asked, sounding like the Daddy I knew.

“Yes. Besides my being late, everything else was okay.” I fixed my jacket and pouted my lips as I looked at my outfit. “Do you think I look too—” I hummed as I thought of a word. “—stylish?”

He broke out laughing and shook his head as he took in my outfit. “You’re exactly like your mom: ever so modest.” He pressed his lips against my temple, and I giggled as I patted down my clothes.

“Such beauty was never meant to be muted; you should be grateful you got to be in the presence of such beautiful women.” I flipped my hair back and rolled my shoulders.

“Indeed, I am delighted.” He gave me his arm, and I gladly accepted as we headed to the door.

“Daddy, the moment I’m introduced to the team, we’re not family. We are colleagues,” I said to him, and he chuckled.

“Sure, pudding.” He nodded as he led us to the team meeting room. We stood in front of the double doors, and he unlatched his arm from mine and smiled. “Are you ready, Miss Collins?”
