“Sure,” Rage replies, sounding as bored as I feel. It takes him a few seconds, but his voice comes back through the earpiece, “There were no delays. He should’ve been home when we said.”

My uncle sighs, “I guess we wait.”

“How long are we going to wait until we call it a night and try again at a different time?” I ask.

“I’m not complaining, but my ass is going numb,” Rage chimes in.

I chuckle, “That sounds like complaining to me. You do realize that although you’re supposed to be on the lookout, slash the getaway driver, you can get up and move around?”

“I’m in the van,” Rage retorts.

I shrug even though he can’t see me, and reply, “There’s still enough room in it to get up and do a hunched-over few steps; your ass wouldn’t be numb then.”

“Guys, can we focus, please?” Alaric asks, sounding exasperated but also amused.

“Sure, answer the question, how long?” I retort.

“We’ll give it another hour or so. There’s always a chance that he’s stopped off to get something to eat or something similar,” Alaric suggests and then adds, “We need to get him out of the picture; he’s working closely with Liam at the moment and is in charge of the second biggest port that Liam is using. If we can get him out of the way, then we throw a serious wrench in Liam’s empire, and he should hopefully be left scrambling for long enough that we can take out some more key players.”

“I know,” I reply, a growl to my voice now, “we’ll get him, don’t worry.”

The earpieces fall silent again as they both go back to keeping a lookout and making sure that I’m not about to be found in an abandoned building, fifteen stories up with a sniper rifle pointed at the building opposite.

I’m not even sure that Alaric’s connections could get me out of that, especially since he doesn’t want it known that he’s got Rage and me helping him out.

As it often does at the moment, my thoughts drift to the guys. It's only been a couple of weeks since I left, but I miss them, and I know that they’re pissed. They aren’t stupid; they know that I’m doing dangerous shit. They just have no idea how dangerous it really is. I also know that they’re most likely capable of helping us. I’ve been on some of their jobs, and I’ve seen them work; they’re actually more than capable, but this feels like my mess. Not some nameless job, but a mess of my own making, even though that’s not true and my only real link is that Liam is my father.

Even so, if they were to get hurt or worse, on this job, I would feel like it was my fault since I was the one to bring them in, and I wouldn’t be able to live with myself. They’re safer where they are; even doing the jobs that they do on the side, they are still far safer than they would be if I brought them in on this.

Not to mention that it would get incredibly complicated with their parents. They actually have parents who care about them, well, most of them do; Luc’s need to be buried, but he always turned down my offer to help with that; I don’t think he thought that I was serious. Because they’ve got loving parents, it’s not like they could just disappear with no real excuse or reasoning, and giving them a good reason to leave, one that would be good enough for the parents, would be far too complicated and not something that Alaric can pull off at the moment.

Maybe eventually, when they turn eighteen or something, I’ll bring them in, but honestly, for now, I want to keep them as far away from all of this as I possibly can.

Liam is dangerous, and Blake is even more so. If either of them realized that I care about more than just Alaric, Rage, and Jynx, then they’d try and use them against me because there’s no way that can use the three I currently care about, Jynx would gut them on sight and have D as back up, Rage is just as deadly, and Alaric will have them arrested and thrown into a cell so fucking quickly that they won’t know which way is fucking up.

But the guys are vulnerable simply because they haven’t been involved in this from the beginning.

When the alarm went off to say that someone was in the cabin, I have to admit that a spear of panic went through me; if one of Liam’s men were in town, then that would’ve meant that the guys were not safe, and I would’ve been back there in a flash. It was a relief to see that it was just the guys, and I couldn’t help but smile that they were looking into my disappearance.

That they cared enough to look into my disappearance, not many people genuinely care about me, and it was just even more confirmation that they really are family to me. I knew that I shouldn’t message, Alaric had warned me, but they were checking the fucking place for prints and putting their own prints everywhere in the process. If any of Liam’s men turned up and searched the place, they’d find the guy's prints and immediately link them to me.

That would put them in so much danger, especially since they wouldn’t have been briefed and wouldn’t really know just how much danger they were in. So, I had to message them to warn them to wipe the place and to let them know that I was okay. Of course, they didn’t believe me, but that’s because they aren’t stupid. I probably wasn’t as careful as I should have been about hiding things from my past from them, but then that’s because they very quickly became like family to me, and as it turns out, they’ve got just as many demons as I do, although a different kind.

I do feel bad that I wasn’t able to help them find Ever before I had to leave, but if I get the chance, I’ll carry on looking now, and if I find anything, I’ll send the information to them. The fact that she’s so difficult to find is definitely interesting and, honestly, makes me suspicious.

“Heads up,” Rage says over the earpiece.

I have no idea how long I was tuned out for, but it was a fucking stupid move on my part; anyone could’ve snuck up on me and would’ve been caught unaware; I know better.

“Talk to me,” I reply seriously, looking through the scope of my gun and over at the building, seeing the apartment still empty.

“He’s on his way up. He’s staggering around like he’s drunk.” Rage replies.

I roll my eyes. This guy is supposed to be one of the most dangerous men in the country. He’s on the most wanted list, but none of the official people can touch him. He always manages to slip through on a technicality or someone taking a bribe, and all manner of things really, so their hands are tied. But mine aren’t, and that’s why Alaric called me in; he’ll take the credit, and yet another criminal and link to my father will be gone, weakening his vast business. The guy we're here to end has guns, drugs, women, and children go through his port, and he samples the merchandise. He is the lowest form of scum, and quite frankly, I won’t feel any remorse when I pull the trigger.

“He’s not in his apartment yet,” I say as I scan the entire place. I have a perfect view of the front door from my vantage point, so I’ll know as soon as he steps through the door, but I won’t be able to take the shot until he’s shut himself into his apartment. We don’t want anyone to alert the cops before I can leave and before Alaric has a chance to secure the scene and get his people in.

Rage chuckles, “Give him a chance; he’s three sheets to the wind, dude. I’ll be surprised if he even manages to make it up the stairs.”
