TEAGAN

When I wake up, there's a note on the bed beside me that reads, Shower and meet me on the terrace.

Curious, I know better than to argue or second-guess Tobias. I’m still sore but happy. I wash slowly, pulling on an airy sundress and braiding my hair back without drying it, getting more eager by the second to see what he's planned.

It's sunset by the time I make it out to the terrace, and my stomach is growling. It almost makes me laugh. How funny is it that I can go from finding out that the love of my life used to be a hitman, to accepting the fact, having hot sex with him, and now being hungry and more concerned with food than anything else?

My life has gotten so, so strange.

Beautifully strange, I correct myself, exiting onto the terrace and seeing the pathway of lit candles leading down the outdoor stairs to the boat dock.

And there, at the end of the pathway, is Tobias in a suit surrounded by flicking candles and the beautiful turquoise of Lake Michigan. He looks impossibly handsome—tall and dark, with a dangerous air about him that only draws me in more. Swallowing and feeling tears pricking at the corners of my eyes already, I start to make my way down to him, heart pounding.

He's standing next to a little table, covered with a white tablecloth, a candle lit on top. There’s no food yet, though, which means that there must be something else before dinner. Another plan Tobias has up his sleeve.

"Good evening," he greets me, taking my hand and pulling me close. "How are you feeling?"

"Hello," I reply, my voice breathy. "A little sore, but good."

Tobias takes me by the shoulders and turns me around, so we're both facing the sun setting over the water. "What do you think of this place, Teagan? This life we’ve been living for the past few months?"

"It's beautiful," I murmur. "I’ve never been so happy."

"I don’t deserve you, sweetheart, but there’s no way in hell I’m going to give you up. This life with you is what I’ve always hoped for. It’s why I’ve been drawn to you since day one,” he replies, and I can feel his eyes on me.

My cheeks burn, and I can't stop the smile on my face. "What is this, Tobias?"

He walks behind me, and I hear the swish of him dipping his hand into his pocket. I'm still facing away when he surprises me by declaring, "Teagan. I love you. I love you so damn much."

I suck in a breath, tears freely flowing now. "Oh, Tobias. I love you too."

"Turn around, doll."

I do as I'm told, and there is Tobias, the love of my life, down on one knee with a velvet box in his hand. "Will you marry me, doll? Be my wife, have kids with me, and spend every single day of our lives together?"

My hands fly to my mouth as I nod. "Yes. Of course, it’s a yes!"

He opens the box, and the diamond is enormous, shining brightly in the evening light. "It was my grandmother's," he tells me, slipping it onto my finger. "And now it's yours. My beautiful wife-to-be.”

Openly crying now, I tug his hands until he stands. "I don't have a ring," I sniffle. "But I do have a gift for you, too."

Gently, I place one of his hands over my belly, and for the first time ever, I think I've shocked Tobias. His mouth falls open, and it takes him a long moment before he whispers, "You're pregnant?"

Too emotional for words, I nod, and he sweeps me up in his arms.

"God, you're perfect," he says, kissing me deeply. "Fucking perfect."

He pulls back and looks at me. "You are my heart and soul, you know that? You’re the only thing that makes me feel truly alive in this long, jaded life I’ve lived. We’re going to have a family, and I swear nothing will ever happen to any of you. Ever.”

"Tobias," I breathe, and then he kisses me again.

"You're everything, Teagan." He laughs, truly happy. "I love you so fucking much."

There, under the setting sun, everything in my life clicks together and becomes complete. It shouldn't work, but it does. I've fallen for my ex's dangerous hitman daddy, and it's the best decision I've ever made.
