“Chad!” Savvy pins him with a glare.

“What? It’s not my fault he isn't man enough to throw around a football.”

“I’ve had about enough of this shit. In the morning, I expect you out of my house.” Donny glares at the asshole.

Chad glances from one person to the other. In the beginning he thinks Donny’s joking, but when no one else says anything, he sobers quickly.

“Are you serious? You’re kicking me out?” He stares at Donny completely slack jawed.

“You’re damn straight! You don’t get to come into my home and insult my family.”

“He’s not even your family!” Chad holds a hand out in my direction.

“He’s more of my family than you’ll ever be. Just like he’s more of a man than you’ll ever be. Nixon was willing to give his life to protect yours. Do you even realize that? He’s one of the men who risked everything to make sure people like you could throw around a ball and remain free.”

Donny glances in my direction. I know it’s on the tip of his tongue to tell Chad exactly how much I lost by serving my country but I don’t want him to be the one to tell Savvy. I plan to tell her myself tomorrow. I subtly shake my head, asking him to keep silent. I have nothing to prove to Chad and I don’t care about his opinions of me. He nods his head, accepting my request for silence.

“Babe, are you really going to allow this?” Chad turns his gaze on Savvy. She shrinks further into the chair. I wish I could help. I’d love to sweep her into my arms and escape to my house. Get away from all of this drama and just get to be ourselves again.

Savvy opens and closes her mouth several times, but nothing comes out. Her gaze flits from one person to the next, unsure of how to handle this. When she doesn’t come to Chad’s rescue, he launches off the couch.

“Whatever. This place has sucked the entire time. I’m more than happy to go back to school. Are you coming with me?” He glances down at Devon. She directs a huge smile at him and nods her head. I'm sure she’s thinking about how much fun she can have with him. “Savannah, are you coming?”

“No. I came home to visit my parents.” She finally finds her voice. It’s steady and confident. I'm proud of her for standing up for herself and not just following him like he expects her to.

“Are you serious? You’re not coming with me?” He can't hide his shock. He really thought she’d pick him over her family.

“No, I'm not, Chad.”

“Who cares. If she wants to stay here, she can. We drove separately. We don’t need her to go. I'm sure we can have plenty of fun all on our own.” Devon stands, clinging to his arm. It’s pitiful how desperate she is for his attention.

“She’s my girlfriend! She should be putting me first.” Chad crosses his arms over his chest, irritation written all over his face.

I swear Donny’s seconds away from punching him in the face. I'm not sure I’d even stop him. I might actually hold Chad down to make it easier.

“You’re not even sleeping with her. Let’s just leave now, I'm sure I can make this weekend much more fun for us.” Devon sinks her teeth into her plump bottom lip, staring up at Chad.

“How long?” Savannah stares at them. Her voice is void of emotion just like it was when we were alone earlier.

“What?” Chad lifts his gaze from Devon and finally pays attention to Savannah.

“How long have you been cheating on me?”

“What are you talking about?” Chad’s eyes widen in horror. “I’m not-”

“Nine months.” Devon folds her arms across her chest, jutting out her hip. She’s so stuck up and full of herself. I don’t know what Chad can possibly see in her.

“What the fuck, Dev?” Chad growls.

“What? Do you really think she’s going to stay with you now that Daddy dearest doesn’t approve of you? Newsflash, she won't. She’s going to stay here as long as she can. She’s going to fall into Nixon’s arms and she’s going to live out the life they want her to. That’s what Savannah does. She gets the picture-perfect life. She does exactly what’s expected of her. She’s the good girl you could never have.”

“She’s my girlfriend. She’s mine.”

“Is she though? You’ve been dating for a year and she never slept with you. You’ve been cheating on her for almost as long as you’ve been dating. I think it’s time to admit you lost the bet.”

“What bet?” Donny growls.

“Oh, didn’t you know? Your daughter is the center of a football team bet. If Chad could fuck her, he won a few thousand dollars. His time was running out. He thought if he came here for Thanksgiving, she’d throw herself at him.” Devon turns her cold stare on Savannah. “Everyone thinks you’re a stuck-up princess. You’d rather have your nose stuck in a book than pay attention to your boyfriend. He deserves better than you. That’s why I stepped in and gave him what he deserved.”
