Chapter 1

Macy

I hate my job. Absolutely. Hate. It.

It’s not really the job and more the clients I have. I'm so tired of having to explain to these idiots where they’re going wrong. How they need to pull their heads out of their asses and open their sad eyes. They need to see the writing on the walls and agree to a huge image overhaul, but they don’t want to listen to me.

The current client I have on the phone doesn’t understand why he’s getting backlash after having his wife model with their newest line of strollers. He’s too stupid to realize moms who are pregnant or just gave birth don’t want to see a size zero model wearing a bikini and a big smile while pushing around a stroller with a fake baby. Yup, they didn’t even have a real baby in the stroller and it’s so obvious it’s plastic. It’s almost comical.

“Ok, just imagine this with me for a minute.” I take a deep breath and pray for patience because I might murder this man if he doesn’t listen this time. “When a woman gets pregnant, what happens?”

“They get fat,” he states so matter-of-factly that I actually let my head fall to my desk with a loud bang.

“They don’t get fat you stupid asshole. Their stomachs get bigger and rounder to make room for the baby! By the end of their pregnancies, most of them are physically uncomfortable and they miss being able to get off the couch easily because their bellies get in the way. Do you really think they want to buy a stroller with someone who has three percent body fat on the box?”

“I mean I don’t understand why that matters,” he huffs.

“Because it makes them feel bad about themselves! Please tell me you let your toddler make this marketing campaign, because if you paid someone for this, you’re stupider than I thought.”

“I hired the most prestigious marketing company in the city. He’s great at his job.”

“Did you sleep with the boss’s wife or something? Maybe his daughter? Because I can't fathom why else he would screw you over like this.”

“Macy,” he growls.

“Now, imagine they just spent forty hours in labor.” I ignore him and keep going. “They’re exhausted and know the days of sleeping through the night are over. Then they’ll go to the store to look for a stroller a few weeks later. They don’t know the last time they took a shower or if their clothes even match. They’re too tired to care because the baby only sleeps if you push them around in a stroller or go for a drive. So, they see your stroller with a model on the front. One who did a full spread in Playboy and has her hair and makeup professionally done to perfection. Do you really think they want this stroller when they might look worse than ever before?”

“No?” His answer is a question. Not even a hint of a statement and that makes me want to cry. Why are some people too thick headed to notice what’s going on around them?

“No! They want someone who’s normal. Someone who isn't too pretty, but doesn’t look quite as exhausted as they do. They want to see a loving mom push around her baby, not a hunk of plastic.”

“I think I'm understanding you. So, you’re saying I need someone unimpressive. Someone who is a plain Jane to do this?”

“Kinda? You just need a normal woman.” I nod my head as a slow smile spreads across my face. I glance down at my watch and notice it’s only taken me two hours and thirty minutes to get him to understand. That’s a whole hour shorter than last week. Improvements are improvements.

“Would you do it?” He asks a little too excitedly.

“Do what?” I frown as I click on an email marked important. I swear if this is Christopher sending me another message to let me know he had a good time on our date, I might punch him in the throat if I see him in the break room.

There was nothing enjoyable about our date. He showed up ten minutes late and looked like he ran through a wind tunnel just to get there. Every time his phone made a noise, he’d jump to answer it and ignore me. And when he tried to kiss me at the end of the night, he slobbered all over my face and left me smelling like his garlic breath.

No thank you.

“I think you could be the perfect model for my new stroller line. You always look tired and you’re pretty, yet still plain. Women won't feel bad when they compare themselves to you. It’s perfect.”

And just like that, I know Christopher is going to be the least of my problems because I'm about to be fired.

Chapter 2

Cord

“I thought we were going to Kennedy’s,” I grumble as I follow Smithy down the street in the opposite direction of the pub.

“Nah, we always go there. I want to go somewhere else for once.” He waves for me to continue following him.

“Yeah, we always go there because people leave us alone.”

“Oh, c’mon! Not that many people are going to recognize us. And even if they do, who cares? Don’t you love having women throw themselves at you?” A big grin spreads over his face and his eyes light up with excitement.
