It is no fun to tell him off now, Esme complained. He is already sorry.

He is, I agreed. ‘Archie. Look at me. You know what I am going to say.’

‘I should have told you about Larsden.’

I nodded. ‘You should have told me about Larsden.’

His lips turned up a little as I repeated his words. ‘If it had been my secret, I swear I would have. But it was not my head on the chopping block. No matter how much I reassured Thea that you wouldn’t be angry, she is too used to alphas doling out punishment first and asking questions later – if at all. I’m sorry.’

I really had been intending to chew him out but his eyes were so earnest that I just couldn’t. ‘It’s fine,’ I found myself saying. Damn me and my people-pleasing ways! ‘But next time, come to me. If I find out you’ve been keeping something like this from me again, there will be consequences,’ I promised firmly.

There, that was better, right? Of course I had no idea what the consequences would be, but still. That was Future Lucy’s problem. ‘Off you go,’ I dismissed him, feeling suddenly tired.

Archie gave a low bow. Moments after the office door closed, Greg came in. ‘Hey, Peaches, you okay?’

I smiled. ‘Better now.’ I stood up, went to him and gave him a slow, languid kiss. God, I’d missed his scent swirling around me and making me love-drunk. He was such a good man, and he was mine. For now.

‘I saw Archie leaving,’ he commented.

‘Yeah. Thea killed Larsden in self-defence and Archie helped her cover it up.’

His eyebrows rose. ‘She confessed?’

‘Yeah.’

‘What did you do about it?’

‘Nothing. Larsden was an asshole.’

He frowned. ‘The Council may not be happy with that.’

‘The Council can go fuck themselves.’

Practically speaking, Esme said, that is unlikely.

I giggled. ‘Esme thinks it is unlikely the Council will be able to fuck themselves.’

‘Well, not by themselves,’ Greg said facetiously, ‘but they could certainly fuck each other.’ He sobered. ‘They’ll want to know who killed Larsden.’

‘And we’re not going to tell them. We’re going to tell them that the perpetrator has been found and dealt with and that they don’t need to know anything else. If Larsden’s alpha has a problem with that, he can take it up with me.’

‘Larsden was second to Rain.’

‘Was he?’ I said with faux innocence and batted my eyelashes. ‘Well then, I guess Rain will have to come and speak to me.’

‘On your land,’ Greg grinned. ‘On your terms.’

I smiled. ‘Why, that just hadn’t occurred to me.’

‘Uh-huh.’ He laughed. ‘I come with good news.’

‘Great, that’s my favourite type.’ I kissed his neck. ‘Is the news that it is time for us to get super-naked together?’

‘Are there degrees of naked?’

‘Oh yes,’ I purred. ‘I’ll show them to you later.’

‘I’m totally in. But no, that wasn’t my good news.’
