The fish jerks her again, this time pulling hard enough to smash Brynn's hip right into the solid white fiberglass of the boat.

"Let go, Brynn!" I say, running toward her.

The fish thrashes again, as I thought it would, and pulls Brynn up onto the side of the boat.

She lets out a shriek just before I get to her and wrap one arm around her while my other hand yanks out the small knife I have in my pocket and slice the line to the fishing rod, letting the fish get away.

We stubble back into the boat with my arm protectively around her until I'm sure she has her footing.

I let out a sigh of relief—Brynn's safe in the boat and not at the bottom of the ocean.

"Why did you do that? I told you that I almost had it," she says.

"Because you didn't have it. That fish was about to drown you. You're welcome for me saving your life, by the way."

She turns back to look out at the ocean.

There's no evidence of the fish that got away, but when she turns back to look at me, she's beaming—the polar opposite facial expression she had a moment ago.

"I can't believe I just caught a fish!" she says, her smile so bright; it's almost painful to see that after over a week together, this is the first time I've seen her really smile. "Oh my God… feel my heartbeat."

She lifts my right hand and brings it up to her chest, laying it flat against her body.

My hand covers her heart and most of her left breasts.

I don't need to be reminded of how her bare breasts feel in my hands. I remember it vividly from days ago. My cock twitches the moment I feel her hard nipple under her tank top.

Does she know I can feel it?

"It's racing from catching that fish." Her entire face is lit up with excitement. "Can you feel that?"

I nod, feeling the pounding heartbeat. "Yeah, I can feel it. It matches mine," I admit, though my heart races for different reasons.

Without warning, she reaches toward me. The heat of her fingertips glides up my ribcage until her palm rests over my left pec.

"It's beating almost as fast as mine," she says, her hand covering the organ she's infiltrated so easily despite my best efforts to keep her out.

I drop my hand from her body. If I keep it there any longer, she'll end up laid out on the bed below the deck cabin with my head between her thighs and my handprint on her ass.

"It's racing from watching you almost get pulled overboard," I admit.

Her eyes reach up to mine—her eyebrows softening.

Her eyes meet mine, her eyebrows softening. "That's one way to get me out of your life for good. You'd never have to worry about me sneaking onto your boat again uninvited," she smirks, but nothing about the idea is funny to me.

Losing Brynn to Daniel is bad enough; losing her to the ocean is something I'd never get over and something I'll never let happen. If the ocean requires one of us, it can take me. As long as I'm of sound mind and body, I won't ever allow a single strand of hair on her head to be harmed.

"Where did you get that from? I don't want you out of my life for good," I say, but Brynn rolls her eyes in response. "And what part of the last week and a half leads you to believe that I'd let you get hurt? If you would have gotten pulled in, I would have dove in after you."

Her eyebrows pull together, and her pink lips turn down into a frown. A look of confusion covers her beautiful features.

"You would have gone in after me? Why would you do that?" she asks, her eyes frantically searching mine.

"Because there’s no limit to what I’d do to keep you safe. And I wouldn't have bothered to come back up for air unless you were coming up with me."

She gives a slight shake of her head.

"That's ridiculous. You're saying that you'd risk drowning to protect a girl you don't even like. That makes no sense."
