“And what’s that?”

“That you’ll be careful.”

“That shit isn’t for me.”

“Either way. If one person takes the wrong thing and someone rats you out for giving it to them…its game over for you.”

“I’m touched that you care.”

“I may dislike you ninety percent of the time, but I care about what happens to you.”

“And that other ten percent?”

Her cheeks bloom pink as she shuts the door without responding. I lay my head back against the headrest and close my eyes. After a few minutes pass, my cell phone vibrates with a text message from Gauge.

Did you get it?

Yup. All good.

He refuses to go back to Jonesy’s after what happened last time. Can’t say that I blame him, but he should have known better. Nothing is free. Especially not from your local drug dealer.

By the time I drag my ass inside, Dahlia is in her room. Her light is out, but I can hear her on the phone with someone. Probably her punk ass boyfriend. I should go into her room and fuck with her for the hell of it. But I figure I’ve tortured her enough for one day and I have a paper due.

Chapter Ten

“Hey, you.” I flop down onto my bed as Matt answers my call.

“You’re alive,” he mutters with a tone that tells me he’s more than annoyed with me.

“It’s been a crazy couple of days. I’m sorry I haven’t been more responsive. It’s just so much at once.” Kyson is too much to handle.

“I get that. I was only worried. I don’t mean to be a dick. It’s killing me not to be able to hop into my car and drive over to your house whenever I want.”

“I wish you could.” I pick at a piece of thread on the edge of my pillowcase as I hug it to my chest. “I haven’t even unpacked.”

“Everyone treating you okay?”

“Yup. I mean, I’ve barely seen John and Helen. They’re busy with work and stuff.”

“And what’s his name? Kyle. Is he being nice to you?”

My stomach does a flip at the thought of Kyson and how nice he is. “Kyson and he’s fine. He’s got his friends and football.”

“No girlfriend?”

My mind flashes to Kyson kissing me. “Not sure. We haven’t talked all that much.” He’s mostly had his tongue down my throat. “I made a new friend. Her name is Lauren. She’s kind of taken me under her wing and been showing me the ropes around school and town.”

“Good.”

“Hey, man. You coming or what,” some dude in the background asks.

“Do you need to go?”

“Yeah, I kind of agreed to check out this fraternity with my roommate.”

“Oh. I thought you weren’t interested in joining one.”

“It’s just a mixer, and he thought I could get out of the room and stop pissing and moaning about missing you.”
