“Contractions? I thought you said you weren’t getting those, yet?” Dario drags his eyes away from it too so he can narrow them on me.

“I’ve only had a few and I wanted to wait until we got here. You were getting stressed out enough as it was.”

“Do they hurt, are they manageable?” All that panic returns to his face again.

“I’m not going to lie, they aren’t pleasant.” I rest my head back and stroke the side of my thigh when I start to feel them ache.

“Can you give her something for that?” Dario looks at the nurse.

“Dr. Walsh will be here very soon, he can see how dilated you are and then come up with a plan of action,” she assures us.

“I’m delivering naturally. I don’t want a C-section.” I make that point very clear.

“That's to be discussed,” Dario interjects.

“I did see that request on your notes and we will, of course, do all we can to support that. I also see that at your last sonogram, both babies were behaving and positioned head down, so it’s all looking very promising.” I nod back at her, gratefully. “I’ll leave the two of you to get comfortable, Dr. Walsh will be here soon.” She steps out of the room and Dario moves to the monitor assessing the screen like he knows what he’s looking at.

“You shouldn’t have lied to me.” He frowns and I can tell he’s a little mad at me.

“I’m sorry, I was just trying to keep you calm. This should be an exciting tiimmmmeee. Oooofff!” My whole body tenses when another contraction comes.

“Shit. That looked much bigger than the last one.” Dario strokes under my belly as it starts to pass.

“It felt it too.” I manage to laugh.

“Your stomach went rigid.” He stares down at it in shock.

“These little girls are definitely coming, are you ready?” I smile up at him.

“I’m more than ready.” The kiss he gives me proves I’m forgiven.

“Six?” I stare at Dr. Walsh in disbelief. It’s been four hours since he arrived and these contractions are getting harder to withstand.

“I’m afraid first babies tend not to rush.” He slides the gloves off his hand and stands up from the stool that's positioned between my legs.

“We can give you something for the pain, you're advanced enough for a spinal block.”

“Or a C-section,” Dario chimes in.

“I told you, I’m not having a C-section.” I shake my head when another pain claws at my insides and Dario kisses the hand I squeeze his with.

“At least take the epidural,” he begs me.

“No, I can handle it.” I recollect myself once the pain subsides.

“You're so fucking stubborn.” He shakes his head and the smirk on his face makes me smile back at him.

“Isn’t that what attracted you to me in the first place?” I remind him.

“Yes, but seeing you in pain and being helpless is making me mad at you, for it.” His palm swipes over my forehead to brush the hair off it.

“Just be grateful that I haven’t got you in a headlock, yet.” I manage to make him laugh, despite how worried he looks.

DARIO

“This is taking too long, it’s been hours,” I whisper to the doctor when he comes back into the room.

“Dariooooo!” Madalina screams her way through another contraction, her knuckles turning white as she squeezes the rail. It makes my heart feel like it’s being pulled from my fucking chest.
