“I lied, just like you lied about these.” Picking up the pills from the nightstand she launches them at me and narrowly misses my head.

“Madalina, I never said that those were contraceptives,” I point out, which only seems to make her more frustrated. I don’t care how mad she is right now, I’m more focused on the relief that she was lying about being drunk last night.

“Maybe not, but you made me believe that they were. You had me thinking that you and I might actually work.” She laughs bitterly. “You made me see you differently. I wanted to give us a chance, but you are exactly who everyone says you are. You're a ruthless bastard. I don’t want to be married to you and I don’t want to bring your child into this world.” She takes off her wedding ring and launches that at me too as she gets up and makes her way to the door.

“Madalina, what are you doing?”

“I’m leaving you,” she tells me, and I laugh at her in response.

“You think that's an option?”

“Of course, it’s an option, you can’t seriously expect me to stay married to you. You deceived me, you manipulated this whole thing and I hate you for it.” The tears are filling up her eyes and she’s trying so hard to be strong.

“You can’t leave, you are bound to me, and not just by marriage. You are carrying the next DeMarco heir.” I feel thesmile lift onto my lips at the thought of it. “There is no way I am letting you walk out that door.” This girl is as naïve as she is beautiful.

“What are you going to do, Dario? Chain me up? Lock me away?”

“If that's what it takes, then that's what I will do.” I shrug, wondering how long it will take her to realize that she has no way out of this.

“Then do it, because I will not stay here willingly.” She fronts up to me, with no fear in her eyes, just hate.

“Get into bed, you’ve had a shock and you should rest,” I tell her calmly.

“No. I’m done doing what you want me to do. I don’t care who you are or who your father is, you took away my basic human rights and I willneverforgive you for it. I will run at every opportunity I get,” she warns, and I believe her because I have never seen someone look more determined.

“You will never be free of me.” I make her that promise before I step past her and walk out the door.

“Mrs. DeMarco does not leave this house,” I call out to whichever of my guards are close enough to hear me.

Then storming into my office I take a seat behind my desk and pour myself something strong. I text my orders to Vito and ignore the hurt in my chest. I’m doing the right thing.

Madalina belongs here with me. No matter how mad she is or how much she hates me. No one can protect her or my child the way I can.

MADALINA

“Iwant to talk to my father.” I scowl at him as I get up from the bed and walk toward him.

“You need to calm down.” he places the tray of food that Greta has prepared for me on the desk by the window and I immediately sweep my hand across the surface, knocking it to the floor.

“Fuck you!” I spit at him like a feral animal.

“You need to eat, it’s not just you that you have to think about, now.” he wipes my saliva off his cheek with two fingers, calmly taking a seat in the corner of the room. “I understand that you feel upset and deceived, but you must realize, that I’m your husband and I know what's best for you.”

“You think having me chained to a fucking bed is what’sbestfor me?” I look down at the shackles that his guards have attached to my wrists. “Dario, you're crazy. Keeping me chained in here like an animal is almost as inhumane as tricking me into getting pregnant.”

“I’m ensuring that you don’t do anything stupid. I can’t have you leave here, not now that you are responsible for something so precious.” He stands up, and comes toward me, placing his hand on my stomach and smiling to himself. I haveto ignore the warmth that his touch spreads over my skin and remember how fucking mad at him I am.

“This is a blessing, Madalina, and until you start treating it like one, I have no option but to detain you.” He’s calm and collected, and I want to tear his face off.

“Do you have any idea how fucked-up what you’ve done is?” I ask, shaking my head and feeling all that disappointment come flooding back again.

“Fucked-up, but necessary.” He smiles sadly. “Stress is one of the most common causes of infertility, I needed you to relax and trust me,” he admits, with his hand still resting on my stomach.

“So, whathaveI been taking all this time?” I ask him curiously

“It’s a fertility drug that they give to women struggling to conceive, it boosts your ovulation and is perfectly safe. I would never have put you in danger.”

“A fertility drug?!” I feel my heart start to beat way faster than it should. “Jesus, you really did go the extra fucking mile.” I laugh sarcastically through my tears.
