“Dario, we talked about this. I’m not ready. We’renot ready. For this to even stand a chance of being tolerable we have to get to know each other and find some kind of common ground.”

“Youtalked about it, Ididn’tlisten,” I point out, amused by the fact that she didn’t even attempt to go to a pharmacy yesterday.

“Which is why this marriage is doomed before it’s even started,” she points out.

“If you can’t tell me when your last period was, I will have to assume that you are ovulating every day. I’ll just have to clear my schedule for the next three weeks.” I shrug, finishing off my coffee and getting up from the table.

“You will not,” she argues before I have a chance to step away. “There is no way I’m going to allow you to keep doing this. It’s…It’s unreasonable, not to mention crazy and I… I…”

“You, what?” I tilt my head and wait for her to come up with something valid.

“I am not going to let you get me pregnant,” she affirms.

“It could already be too late,” I point out and watch her cheeks flush red.

“Seriously, this stops now. I’m not saying it’s never going to happen, but when it does it will be on my terms.” She stands upand keeps that stubborn look on her face. When the door bursts open and Vito rushes in, I can see from his face that something is wrong.

“Boss, we need to go to Brooklyn. Your father just called,” he tells me.

“You go nowhere today, you stay here. We will discuss this later,” I point my finger at her before rushing to the door.

“Dario.” Luca looks pleased to see me when I step into the basement where he’s being held. “Dario, you need to hear me out, I didn’t act alone in this. It wasn’t even my idea.”

“You know the rules, Luca.” I take off my jacket and start to roll up my sleeves. I don’t want to give him the beating he’s earned. We were close once. I remember how our mothers would spend hours talking and we’d play around the house.

“It was never meant to get that far, we were just going to give him a warning. Hex doesn’t deserve the trust your father gives him.

“My father is his own man, and he doesn’t appreciate people hurting the men that are loyal to him.”

“Nic was the one who wouldn’t stop. Hex called his sister a whore and he just lost it.” He says my wife's brother’s name far too loud, forcing me to slam my hand over his mouth.

“Why the fuck was Nicolas Conte with you?” I hiss at him, hoping the men outside who work for my father didn’t hear him.

“We hang together and he was with me when I got the call from my brother. We went straight to Hex’s apartment. We walked in, I explained why we were there and demanded he pay what my family was owed, then he looked at Nic and called his sister a whore. That’s when he lost all control andslammed his head into the coffee table. Six times.” He clears his throat.

“The fucker was lucky it wasn’t me who heard him say it, I would have made him suffer much worse.”

“Yeah, well, he’ll probably be suffering for the rest of his miserable life. Your father has physicians

taking care of him, and although he’s alive I doubt he’s got much left upstairs.”

I think about that while I slide the brass knuckles over my fingers.

“Where is my father keeping him?” I ask as I step closer.

“The men who brought me here told me not to say. Not even to you.” Luca shakes his head and focuses on my fist.

“They aren’t the ones who are about to punish you,” I remind him, resting my hand on his shoulder.

“Dario” He looks up at me with fear, pleading with me for some kind of mercy.

“Tell me where he is and give me your word that you will leave Nicolas Conte’s name out of your mouth and I’ll make this easier on you,” I offer, and when Luca closes his eyes and sighs, I wait for him to give me his answer.

“Hex is at Wingates.” He names one of the small, private clinics that are owned by my father and used for occasions such as this one. “And you have my word on Nic.” He nods his head in agreement.

“Okay.” I nod back at him and squeeze his shoulder in my hand before I lay three hard, heavy blows into the side of his face. His skin splits open and blood stains my shirt but he takes them like a champ. Then I knock him back with a punch from my other hand that knocks him, and the chair, to the floor. I use my thumb to swipe his blood from my bottom lip when I taste it there, before kicking him in the ribs a few times and ensuring he hurts for his stupidity.

Eventually, I step back from him, sliding the blood-stained duster off my knuckles. “Next time you have a dispute with your district leader, you bring it to me or my father. Our factions do not scrap among each other like dogs.” I tell him before I head for the door.
