Chapter Fourteen

One Week Later

Knox

The second I step inside the door of Callahan’s Bar, my gaze zeroes in on Saylor. She’s sitting at the bar next to my sister. Their hands move in the air as they talk animatedly with each other.

She’s started to come out of her shell. The confidence she’s gained by opening up to my friends and family has brought out her fun and flirty side, and I’m not complaining. I love it.

I slip through the crowd, waving to some of the guys from the team. With only one thing on my mind, I don’t stop to chat. As if she senses my presence, she twists on her stool, and her eyes light up. She smiles and hops to the floor, embracing me as I wrap my arms around her waist. “Hey, baby. I missed you.”

“I missed you, too.” She stands on her tiptoes and presses her lips to mine. I inhale her natural fragrance over the typical bar smells–vanilla, cinnamon, and sugar. If I could bottle this up and sell it to all those hopelessly lonely men like I was, I’d make a killing. “But you would’ve been bored looking at clothes.”

My mom, sister, and Saylor went to the stylist’s place to discover their movement styles. Whatever that is. “Yeah, spending the day surrounded by clothes and make-up would’ve hampered my street cred.”

She giggles as my sister rolls her eyes. “Brother, you don’t have street cred.”

“Yes, I do.” I step back and nod to Wylder, the bartender.

“What can I get you?” He hits his forefinger against the nosepiece of his glasses, sliding them tighter to his face.

“I’ll take a.…” I glance at the drinks in front of the girls. Mugs of beer. “I’ll take what they’re having.”

“Great choice.” He nods, grabs a clean mug, and travels to the taps.

Several of my friends were shocked to learn one of their favorite bartenders was a published thriller novelist. Apparently, he uses the bar scene as inspiration.

Saylor slips back onto her stool, and I cross my arms over my chest, standing behind them. “How was the trip?”

“It was wonderful.” Mia clutches my upper arm. “We got along great and had so much fun. Mom looked amazing in a pair of leopard print pants.”

They laugh in unison until tears fill their eyes. Clearly, there’s an inside joke, and I don’t even want to know what it is.

“Interesting.”

“Here you go.” Wylder drops off my drink. After I thank him, he moves on to the next guest.

While they share their afternoon experiences, because I clearly did need to know about their day, I rub Saylor’s back. Spending any time not touching her makes me anxious–not that I’m afraid she’s going somewhere.

We fit together seamlessly. Most nights, we spend together and see each other at least once during the day at work. However, we’re careful not to make our relationship a thing at work. The team’s owner is a supporter of family if it doesn’t interfere with team business.

“How was practice?” She lays her head on my chest.

“Productive. We’re ready for the game.” I take a drink of my beer and set it back on the bar top. I’m driving, so one is my limit.

The subtle change in her expression would be missed by anyone else. “Babe, I’ll only be gone a couple of days.”

“I know. It’s ridiculous. I’ve survived my entire life without you, but now the thought of you going out of town has me depressed.”

“You two are adorable.” Mia smiles and slides off her seat. “But if I stick around to watch, I’m going to go home and eat a pint of ice cream and cry myself to sleep.” She winks tilts her head. “Why don’t you come over Sunday to mom’s and watch the game? It’ll just be us girls.”

“I’d love to.” The sadness in her eyes morphs into excitement.

After we tell my sister goodbye, I step between Saylor’s legs and clasp the back of her head. “I’m proud of you.”

She frowns. “Don’t be. Your family is terrific. If it was some other random people, I’d probably have my nose in my phone reading a romance novel.”

“Well, I’m not complaining about that either.” Her core cradles my cock, reminding me it’s been over eight hours since I’ve been buried to the hilt inside of her. Way too fucking long.
